Ancient Roman Carnelian Intaglio 18Kt Gold Ring depicting God Eros and roosters

About the Item

In this 18 kt gold ring, handmade by our goldsmiths, an authentic Roman carnelian intaglio depicting a winged Eros/Cupid standing on a a chariot pulled by two roosters. Eros, the god of Love, known as Cupid by the Romans, has always been depicted, in ancient and modern poetry and figurative arts, as a graceful winged boy, with a cherubic face, carrying a bow and arrows, which he indiscriminately shoots at humans and gods, making them victims of love. Hesiod, in the Theogony, recalls that Eros came into being immediately after Chaos, along with Gaia and Tartarus. Eros is therefore a primordial force that pervades all created beings and inspires their need to perpetuate life. Plato speaks of Eros as a need of the soul and associates it with the concept of Beauty and the need for knowledge inherent in the soul. Virgil celebrates the power of Eros in several instances in the Aeneid. The most famous episode is related to the story of Dido, the queen of Carthage, who, struck by his arrows, fell desperately in love with Aeneas. The Romans had the equivalent of Eros in Cupid. They described him as a mischievous and capricious boy who suddenly struck, continually making victims. Sometimes he was depicted with blindfolded eyes, to indicate that love is blind and does not see the flaws of the beloved. Usually, two wings sprouted from his back. He was sacred to the rooster and the swan. The Rooster, with its upright position full of power and pride, observes the darkness, awaiting the day it introduces and simultaneously announces. A creature with a magical aura, mostly associated with positive connotations, the rooster is an animal that brings light and joy, ferrying man out of the nightmares of the night. In ancient Greece, Asclepius (a deity representing death and rebirth) associated the rooster's red with the sun, and the rooster was also considered a symbol of sexual potency.
