An Egyptian revival ring. Magnificent antique 19th century ring, created in Europe in the Egyptian revival style, back in the 1860's. The outstanding ring has been crafted with classic patterns in solid yellow gold of 14 karats with high polished finish. The main decorative element is the elegant portrait in profile of an Egyptian queen facing to the left and wearing diamond's jewelry such, dangle earrings and a tiara. The queen's portrait is decorated with the difficult polychrome enamel technique, called Peinture sur émail. The craftmanship is exceptionally well done and surely is a one-of-a-kind conversation piece. Egyptian Revival Jewelry For centuries, Ancient Egypt has held the fascination of the public and continues to inspire artists and designers alike. Between the 1860 and 1890, ancient cities were discovered, such as Troy, Pompeii and Alexandria. Archaeological excavations in Egypt, Greece and Rome, discovered artistic pieces of these ancient cultures. These fabulous discoveries, stimulated cultural trips to these countries, popularly called "grand tour". Being the case that the enthusiast visitors bring back small objects, like souvenirs to be assembled into jewelry. The starting point of these trips were in the cities of Rome and Venice. Scarabs have been collected for centuries and were particularly popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries. “Scarabaeus sacer is the Latin name for the dung beetle. Today most people do not have great appreciation for this insect, but this variety and several other members of the family Scarabaeidae, were sacred to the ancient Egyptians. The Egyptians connected the beetles’ habits of rolling balls of dung around their eggs with the concept of eternal life in the after-world. The meaning of Kheper or Scarab was “”becoming, being, metamorphosing, generation, new life, virility, and resurrection.”” Representations of the beetle were an essential symbol in Egyptian art and a whole class of seals and amulets were made in its image. These little amulets of beetle form often bear hieroglyphic designs on their base, including good luck wishes, the names gods, and the names of individuals both noble and common. The most obviously interesting scarabs are those with names of kings, of the royal family, and of officials. Pharaohs were worshiped as gods, and the names of the current pharaoh or a popular deceased pharaohs, such as Thothemes III, were used to bring good luck to the bearer.
