Amadou Kré M'Baye
Abstract Expressionist Acrylic on Canvas.

1990s

About the Item

Abstract expressionist acrylic on canvas by Senegalese artist Amadou Kré M'Baye. Signed bottom right. An excellent example of his abstract expressionist phase which would date the painting to around the 1990s. Amadou expresses great movement with swift confident brushstrokes in his signature blue and orange colours. Many influences on this painting; the expressionism of Jackson Pollock ; the abstract geometric of Wassily Kandinsky and the colour field style of Nicolas de Staël. A painting full of energy with a pop of colour. Kre M’Baye, also known as Amadou (or Armedy) Kre M’Baye (25 April 1949 – 21 October 2014), was a Senegalese artist and art instructor. He was born Andy Keve in Dakar, Senegal, on April 25, 1949. He was nicknamed “Kere” or “Kre” even as a primary school child because he used to draw constantly on the classroom blackboard with chalk (craie in French). Since 1969 he has been an associate of celebrated African artists such as Ibou Diouf, Mamadou Niang, Seidou Barry, Mor Faye (father of Ousmane Faye) and Art College professor Pierre Lods. In 1974 he played the head of a gang in the well-received movie Baks (Yamba), produced by Momar Thiam, but abandoned acting in favor of his career as an artist. His first exhibition in 1976 at the Dynamique Museum of Dakar was highly acclaimed, his painting "The Messenger" receiving particular praise by President Léopold Sédar Senghor. Some of M'Baye's best-known works are his portraits of women inspired by the face of his mother Fari Fate (Mame Fari), “a woman of great renown; a fascinating storyteller of Senegalese history”. Very stylish, full of exuberance and cheerfulness, Fari Fate with her jewellery, her meticulous dresses, her elaborate hairstyles, inspired the artist to a painting style full of fineness. M'Baye also has another style that tends to abstract paintings dominated by blue and orange colours, such as this work. M'Baye is a disciple of Pierre Lods. In 1994 Gaston Madeira formed "Netty Guy" (The Three Baobabs), bringing together Kré M'Baye, Moussa N'Diaye Baydie M'Baye and Zulu, three painters representative of the School of Arts in Dakar, who in 1998 opened a gallery on the Senegalese island of N'gor and founded Workshops N'gor. He was a participant in Tenq, the first workshop on the Triangle model (led by El Hadji Sy) which took place at the Lycée Cheikh Oumar Fontiyou in Saint-Louis, Senegal; the first event of Africa95, a year-long festival celebrating African arts in the UK and Africa, featuring 25 artists from 10 African countries and Great Britain.

Phenomena Spectrum Guardian by Paul Jenkins (1923 - 2012) Acrylic on canvas 76 x 101.5 cm (29 ⁷/₈ x 40 inches) Signed lower middle Paul Jenkins Executed in 1970 Provenance: Gallerie Iris Wazzau, Davos, Switzerland Private collection, Cologne, Germany Artist biography: Born at Kansas City in Missouri (USA), the multi-media artist, poet and playwright Paul Jenkins studied at the Kansas City Art Institute and the Art Students League in New York City. After his discharge from military service at the end of February 1946, he briefly studied playwriting with dramatist George McCalmon at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh. Thereafter, Jenkins spent four years studying with Japanese American artist Yasuo Kuniyoshi in New York City. His first solo exhibitions were held at Studio Paul Facchetti in Paris in 1954 and the Martha Graham Gallery in New York City in 1956. Over the past thirty years, numerous retrospectives have been curated across the globe and Jenkins’ work can found in national collections from Europe and the United States to Israel, Australia and Japan. The diversity of his work springs from Jenkins’ wealth of eclectic influences. Some of his earliest works included what he called "interior landscapes" influenced by ancient natural forms like the caves he visited in the Ozark Mountains in his native-Missouri. Frequent student visits to the Frick Collection in New York fostered a love of the great masters: Bellini, Holbein, Vermeer, Rembrandt, de la Tour, Turner and Goya. In compliment, lingering student visits to the renowned Eastern collection of the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City evoked powerful sympathy for a monumental Chinese fresco...
