About the Item
The 16 in x 23 in watercolor displays striking and colorful qualities that influenced abstract expressionism for decades to come. In 2016 the Dennos Museum in Traverse City, Michigan, in homage to the very first exhibition in the Zimmerman Sculpture Court, installed the first two paintings by the former Michigan State University painting professor, Clif McChesney (1929-2011) on the Court walls, and the glass artistry of Dale Chihuly, featuring works from the Dennos Collection. In 1991, an exhibition of Dale Chihuly glass accompanied the McChesney painting installation.
A Hoosier by birth, he studied at professional schools in Chicago before transferring to Indiana University for his degree. His studies continued at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan where he was awarded his M.F.A. Clif taught as Professor of Art at Michigan State University Art Department from 1960 to retirement in 1991. He was awarded the Distinguished Faculty Award for the College of Arts and Letters in 1985. His work is included in corporate collections as well as the Detroit Institute of Arts, University of Michigan Art Museum, University of California Art Museum, Cranbrook Art Museum and many private collections nationally and internationally.

- "Beauty", Large Mixed Medium, India Ink and Coffee Grounds on Deckle BFK PaperBy Chris LujanLocated in Detroit, MIThis large mixed medium painting in india ink and coffee grounds on heavyweight deckle BFK print paper, "Beauty", depicts an nude woman standing. With impressionistic strokes the observer can only glimpse her outline in browns, leaving the finer details to the imagination, giving the work a ghostly air of a faded memory. Signed by artist lower right. "Capturing movement is everything to me in my work. It exists in the way the brush moves and the hand bends bringing action and life to the surface it is connecting to. The work itself can then exist as a history, and bring forth evidence of time as the essential force within the artwork. In today’s contemporary world, there are many ways to define art. That is why it is impotent that you, the viewer, understand why I create and what art means to me. For me, art is so much more than an image of an object, an advertisement or a statement. Art is in its nature the undeniable evidence of our own humanity and existence. It connects us, to each other and to our past. Speaking to the parts of us we never will fully understand, our emotions, are spirituality and are mortality. As an artist; I need to speak to these feelings and questions. Using mark-making and gestures as a guide, I search, letting go of control as the moment breathes life into the creation of my work. Through the boundary of line, I give shape to the image. Conveying an overall balance between the moment of creation and the structure of the figure. Though this practice, I strive to provoke a universal connection to the work. One that speaks to humanity's emotional understanding of empathy, curiosity, sorrow and joy." - Chris Lujan...Category

- Three Pyramids + Blue BallBy Alexander CalderLocated in Palm Desert, CA"Three Pyramids + Blue Ball" is a gouache on paper by Alexander Calder. The work is signed in the lower right, "Calder 73”. Although renowned for his innovative and groundbreaking sculptures, Alexander Calder started his artistic career as an abstract painter, preferring to use gouache. What is gouache? Gouache is a water-soluble paint – a type of opaque watercolor. As Calder returned to gouache painting towards the end of his life, he was now armed with a lifetime of experience as a sculptor. He explored the three-dimensional vocabulary of sculptural forms he had developed onto the two-dimensional surface of the paper. Certain shapes and colors recur throughout his gouaches and sculptures. Circles, ovals, and other geometric forms dominate the space. There is the same sense of energy and fluidity. The shapes do not sit on the surface but vibrate giving a feeling of movement in contrast to the static nature of painting. Like his sculpture, Calder’s gouache...Category
