Pierre Tetar van Elven
19th Century watercolour painting of Empress Alexandra of Russia

c. 1855

About the Item

The Dutch artist Pierre Tetar van Elven (1828-1908), the court painter of King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy (1828-1878) is responsible for this stunning watercolour painting. The image portrays the Russian Queen (otherwise known as the Empress or Tsarina) Alexandra Feodorovna (1872-1918), famous for being Russia's last Empress before the Revolution of 1917. She was the wife of Tsar Nicholas II, and this painting depicts the Empress together with her entourage during a visit to the French city of Nice in the winter of 1855. The figures are shown in front of a chateau, with a steep hillside shown behind. The watercolour is set inside a rectangular giltwood frame, and it is signed 'P.T. v. Elven' to the lower left. The reverse of the painting contains an inscription in French, which reads, 'Alexandrine Feodorowna Impératrice de Russie et sa suite pendant l'hiver de 1855 a Nice. Pierre Tetar van Elven Nizza' ('Alexandra Feodorovna, Empress of Russia and her followers during the winter of 1855 in Nice. Pierre Tetar van Elven Nizza').

  • Large Watercolour Painting Depicting Turkish Scholars by A. Rosati
    Located in London, GB
Large watercolour painting depicting Turkish scholars by A. Rosati Italian, Early 20th Century Panel: Height 36cm, width 52cm Frame: Height 72cm, width 89cm, depth 4.5cm This sensational watercolour painting depicts two Turkish scholars, who recline in a typical Orientalist interior as they study and discuss the Quran. The figures are beautifully rendered in a sketched, painterly style that harks back to Impressionism, dressed in bright Orientalist robes with ornate detailing. The two men are imbued with contrasting characters, the left-hand figure engaged and leaning forward in discussion, whilst the right reclines in thought. Their setting is marked with Orientalist signifiers, such as the incense lamp and palm plant in the top right-hand corner. Particularly fine detail has been given to the Persian-style rug, which catches the viewer’s eye with its vibrant hues and repeating geometric motif border. Further geometric designs can be seen on the back wall, which utilises circular and zig-zag mosaic patterning. These motifs are replicated in the beautiful frame. A later addition, the frame complements not only the colour palette of the painting with a bright red base, but also the intricate motifs of the painting with gilt foliate decoration. The painting is by the Italian artist Alberto Rosati...

This small watercolor painting by Anna Palm de Rosa, titled "Coach and horses at full speed, Boulogne-sur-Seine," is a vibrant and dynamic piece that captures a moment of speed and elegance from the past. The scene is set in what was known then as Boulogne-sur-Seine, now Boulogne-Billancourt, prior to its name change in 1926. The artwork is only like a postcard and depicts a horse-drawn carriage in full gallop, stirring up a cloud of dust along the gravel path. This sense of motion is further emphasized by one of the ladies on the carriage, who is seen clutching her hat, a detail that adds a personal touch to the scene and underscores the speed at which they are traveling. The artist's ability to capture such a fleeting moment, with the horses' hooves barely touching the ground and the dust cloud swirling around, is a testament to her skill and the liveliness of her compositions.
