About the Item
This fine late 19th-century watercolour by British artist Harold Sutton Palmer RI RBA (1854-1933) depicts a river view near Dunsford in Surrey.
Shimmering between verdant banks, a pool of restful water reflects an array of leafy branches. Each captured with careful observation by an accomplished draughtsman. While on the left, the bountiful foliage twists towards the horizon in a cornucopia of misty tints and tones.
To paint this well requires obsession, a true admiration for the British countryside in all its subtle splendour. And to do so in watercolour, such an unforgiving medium, is quite astonishing.
Palmer’s gentle naturalism tugs at the heartstrings, it’s a poignant reminder that the natural world prevails over any materialistic indulgence. Through his work, he invites us to slow down, open our eyes and ‘see’.
