Linda Newman Boughton
Oracle of Bastet (Blue Ballpoint Pen Drawing of Forested Landscape with Trees)

2023

About the Item

Oracle of Bastet (Blue Ballpoint Pen Drawing of Forested Landscape with Trees), 2023 ballpoint pen on Arches paper Image size: 40 x 30 inches Frame size: 41.5 x 31.5 inches To create the drawings in her latest series, Newman Boughton begins by taking reference photographs. On walks and drives through the wilderness with her camera in tow, the artist forages for moments of communion between light and nature. “I love taking photographs,” she said. “It’s my therapy, my church, going into the woods.” As with her drawings, these images take trees as their primary muse; however, her process of translating the photographs into drawings is not exactly reproductive. Rather than overwhelming the viewer with a uniform density throughout the picture plane, Newman Boughton isolates particular elements of forestry in negative space. In doing so, she wields greater control over the composition, accentuating the shapes that most succinctly articulate her inner story. This aesthetic choice is particularly well-suited to Newman Boughton’s favored medium. Placed in juxtaposition to the intrinsic nothingness of blank paper, each blue mark becomes an electrically charged filament. In some areas, these lines are concentrated to constitute dimensional forms with light and shadow; here is the drawing’s visual weight, though the denseness registers not as heft but organic vitality. About the artist: Born in Asheville, North Carolina and raised in Florida, Newman Boughton was precociously creative, both as a visual artist and as a performer. Hers was a family of artists, and she found early inspiration in the drawings and paintings of her grandmother, who primarily worked in portraiture. “At six, I wasn’t listening to the teacher. I was drawing the people in my class,” she recalled. Newman Boughton would go on to major in theater at Florida State University, but took fine art classes “just to keep my portrait chops going,” she said. On a whim, she enrolled in a fashion illustration course, in which she excelled, prompting her to reconsider her artistic focus. She then relocated to New York City to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology, where she earned a degree in fashion illustration. Newman Boughton worked as an illustrator, photographer, and accessories designer in New York for nearly a decade, honing a skill set that would prove instrumental in the years to come. Yet she became progressively disillusioned by the fashion industry and grew to miss the world of entertainment. After volunteering as a scenic artist on her friend’s film project, Newman Boughton rerouted once again, moving to Hollywood to pursue a career as an artist in the film and television industries. Owing to her technical abilities, she was soon leading teams of scenic artists and eventually found a niche creating custom paintings and copies of masterworks for such films as Water for Elephants, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and Fight Club.

  • Dream a Little Dream (Detailed Blue Ball-Point Drawing of a Forest Landscape)
    By Linda Newman Boughton
    Located in Hudson, NY
Realistic blue ball-point drawing of a lush country forest landscape "Dream a Little Dream", original drawing made in 2022 by Linda Newman Boughton ballpoint pen ('Rite in the Rain' permanent and waterproof ink) on archival paper 54 x 48 inches unframed, 55.25 x 48.75 inches with a custom wood frame with gold leaf interior and protected with Tru Vue Museum Glass (blocks 99% of UV rays, eliminates reflections, optimal light transmission to brighten colors) Signed by the artist Excellent condition and ready to hang Some might struggle to associate impressionist painting and drawing with a ballpoint pen medium, but one of Linda Newman Boughton’s opulent landscape drawings in signature blue ink is a masterclass in the art of immediacy and movement. Linda Newman Boughton’s Baroque inspired landscape "Dream a Little Dream" captures a lush Hudson Valley forest in vivid detail. Taking four months to create, the original drawing was made entirely using the artist's favorite brand of “Rite in the Rain” waterproof blue-ink pen. Working from a photograph, Boughton employed a variation of pen strokes, combining gestural lines that serve as the drawing’s foundation, with tighter strokes to develop the sections of intricate detail. From a wild and tangled web of lines emerges identifiable forms, such as a complex root system or a bushy canopy of leaves. The work itself feels kinetic; millions of mark makings vibrate with an energy that stems from a sacred connection to nature. Boughton’s passion for the arts began early, as she acted, made art, and designed theatrical sets throughout her youth. She went on to study fashion illustration at Florida State University before transferring to F.I.T in New York City. Experience in the fashion world and her love for theatre soon landed her jobs in Hollywood, painting sets and murals for feature films such as Nightmare on Elm...

  • Treesong (Contemporary, Realist Charcoal Landscape Drawing by Sue Bryan)

    Located in Hudson, NY
Treesong (Contemporary, Realist Charcoal Landscape Drawing by Sue Bryan) 18 x 24 x 2 inches Charcoal and acrylic on Primed Arches Paper Mounted on Wood Panel Excellent condition, Ready to hang as is This contemporary charcoal landscape drawing on arches paper was completed in 2021 by Sue Bryan. Born in Ireland, the artist uses landscapes from her childhood as inspiration for her current work primarily consisting of beautifully detailed charcoal drawings of trees and wooded landscapes. The artist captures exquisite detail and luminous light with the mere use of black and white charcoal and carbon pencil. The artist creates this tree through a blend of light and shadow that demonstrates the artist's masterful technique. Dark leaves and winding branches in black charcoal contrast elegantly against a light filled sky. There is sturdy wire installed on the back for easy hanging. Artist Statement: "My work is drawing based. As a native of Ireland, the landscape there has certainly shaped and influenced my own history. Many of my drawings are of places that have a deep personal association for me; an endeavor perhaps to stay connected to my roots. My aim is not only to convey a sense of place and belonging, but also an attempt to capture the ineffable, to evoke a feeling or a memory, to invite the viewer to look beyond and beneath what they see. My process is one of building up tones and textures using a combination of charcoal, carbon and graphite, all of which yield a wonderful range of blacks and grays that vary in density and transparency as much as in tonality. Much of drawing’s appeal to me lies in its very constraint, in its simplification, in the reduction of nature’s macrocosm to the coal-black char of organic matter. For me, the act of drawing is an end in itself." About the work: A native of Ireland, Sue Bryan explores the memories of youth rooted in her homeland's landscape. Employing charcoal on both paper and panel, these moody and misty studies reminds us that the water-locked terrain is not always sunny and green. Exquisite detail found in each tree branch or mass of tall grasses lining the horizon dominates the foreground. Light emulates from the background attempting to penetrate the density of opaque cloud cover. Bryan's small scale drawings convey an intimate and highly personal sense of place and belonging. • "Andes Mountains Peru South America, " Joseph Yoakum, Black Folk Art Landscape
    By Joseph Yoakum
    Located in New York, NY
Joseph Yoakum Andes Mountains Peru So America, circa 1960s Colored pencil and ballpoint pen on paper 7 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches Provenance: Karen Lennox Gallery, Chicago Private Collection, South Dakota Yoakum began drawing in the early 1960s. Most of his work consists of radiantly colored landscapes with mountains, water, trees, and winding roads in abstract and complex configurations. his period of greatest activity — 1965 to 1970 — when he usually made one drawing a day. Yoakum maintained he had seen all the places represented in his drawings, a statement that may not be true in some instances. He traveled a great deal, beginning in his early teens when he ran away from home and became a circus handyman. Yoakum’s drawings can be considered memory images growing out of either actual or imagined experiences. All of his drawings have titles that grew longer and more specific over the years. He dated his works with a rubber stamp — an oddly impersonal, labor-saving device. Although Joseph Yoakum gave vastly different accounts of his background, he was, throughout his life, classified as an African American. Sometimes Yoakum claimed that he was a full-blooded “Nava-joe” Indian, one of twelve or thirteen children born to a farmer on an Indian reservation in Window Rock, Arizona. At other times he insisted that he was of African-American descent. He described his mother as a strong woman who was a doctor and knowledgeable in the use of herbal medicines. Yoakum’s family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, during his early childhood. His father was employed briefly in the railroad yards prior to settling permanently on a farm in nearby Walnut Grove...
