About the Item

A Walk along a path
Watercolor on paper,
27.5 x 18.5 cm
Signed lower right and dedicated "A l'ami Fath"
In its original vintage frame : 47 x 37 cm
The composition of this beautiful watercolour is exemplary of Paul Lecomte's way of painting. For example, the sunken path and the walker with her back to us, which can be found in other of his works, invite the viewer's gaze towards the distance, and above all, of course, the tree on the left which traces a vertical line. The composition is thoughtful and careful, giving the impression that he painted outdoors on the motif.
Finally, the brushstroke is particularly free in this watercolour, which undoubtedly indicates a more advanced date in the artist's career, moving away from a typical Barbizon School style to the impressionist touch of his contemporaries.
Paul Lecomte was born in Paris on April 15, 1842. He was a painter of landscapes and coastal scenes.
He is considered as one of the last quality representatives from the Barbizon School.
He was the pupil of the painter Emile Lambinet (1813-1877) but the influence of Camille Corot and Henri Harpignies are the most noticeable in the developpement of his style.
His art is deeply influenced by japonism just as his almost exact contemporary Claude Monet.
He painted in Brittany, Normandy or South of France but also in England where he exhibited his works also.
He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1868 onward, winning different medals and awards.
He died in Paris on March 21, 1920.
Works by his hand are held by the Louvre Museum and the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris the Musée des Beaux Arts in Mulhouse and the Musée Baron-Martin in Gray.

- Newbury Street, Boston [Louis Boston / Bonwit Teller Building]Located in Boston, MAThis watercolor by Charles Demetropoulos depicts a classical French Academic-style building which was designed in 1862 by architect William G. Preston as the new home of the Boston Society for Natural History, which had been founded in 1830. In the 1860’s, many of Boston’s cultural institutions relocated here to the Back Bay, the elegant residential district being built on the tidal marshes behind the city. When the museum moved here in 1863, the new building dominated the western edge of the landfill. The classical design reflected its role as a “temple of learning.” The building was later renovated into a women’s retail store known as Bonwit Teller and later became home to Louis Boston...Category
