Letter b Irene Brin to Countess Pecci Blunt - 1940s

1940s

About the Item

L. T. S. addressed to Contessa A. L. Pecci-Blunt. Rome, April 7, 1945. 2 pp. Front and back, with free-handwritten corrections, some red-typed words and blue ink "Sender" stamp. Perfect condition. Maria Vittoria Rossi, the Great Lady of the Twentieth Century, became famous under the pseudonym attributed by Leo Longanesi of Iren Brin, but not only. Idro Montanelli, his friend, wrote that she had a "chameleonism that seems to be borderless." She was a prolific writer, "Harper's Bazaar" correspondent to Italy, author of the famous correspondence book in "Settimana Incom (Incom Week)" with the pseudonym "Contessa Clara", a gallerist among the most important of the twentieth century in Rome, founder of "La Margherita" and then of the famous "L’obelisco” on the Sistina road, 146. As the Countess Pecci Blunt, she was a patron. She was an icon of style and elegance, queen of what then would had been called "café-society", halfway between culture and worldliness. And she was also the wife/friend of Gaspero Del Corso, with whom she had an indissoluble relationship. Since just over a year, Rome had been proclaimed "open city", "Savinio had stopped bringing Basque (…), Cecchi had illustrated Wild and portrayed many Americans (...), Tamburi had just returned from Capri where he was a guest of Malaparte, and De Chirico lived in Via Gregoriana and grew his mustache, Mafai had a major role in the Communist faction and Capogrossi had made a series of "Women". In this changing mood, among the exciting misadventure of the Brin-Corso's spouses (reduced to the penniless and he declared deserter), became evident the idea of gathering all those "deviant" artists and somehow continuing what Pecci Blunt had begun with La Cometa. It was a great success. Thus, was born the Obelisk gallery in 1946 with the first exhibition on Morandi and the last in 1978 with Tina Modotti. Among the hundreds of proposals, often there were some worldly and commercial proposals, but also some that became historical. All the avant-garde of the fifties and sixties would be walking by hence, as well as all the classics of the post-war era: Afro, Capogrossi, Fountain, Burri, Pomodoro next to Sironi, Morandi, De Chirico, Balla, Campigli. And for the first time in Italy the great foreigners: Matta, Magritte, Kandinsky, Moore, Calder, Dalí, Bacon, Rauschenberg.

Hardcover. Bound in publisher's original white cloth with spine and front cover stamped in black. Full color illustrations throughout, including several color foldouts. 392 pages. About Alexander Liberman: Considered a revolutionary Minimalist artist, Alexander Liberman produced works that predated the movement by more than a decade. Liberman, not wanting to limit himself to any one form of expression, worked to produce radically minimalist paintings and sculpture in order to illuminate his beliefs about celestial motion, the movement of the eye, as well as human sexuality. The artist’s fascination with American industrialization and modernization ultimately resulted in his widely known red steel sculptures and geometric paintings, which seem to decompose the turbulence of the time period. Alexander Liberman was born in 1912 in Kiev, Russia. He studied first in London and then in Paris. He took courses in philosophy and mathematics at the Sorbonne and architecture at L’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Liberman has had numerous solo exhibitions at museums such as the Jewish Museum, New York (1966); Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, NY (1970); and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC (1970). His sculpture and paintings are included in the museum collections of the Art Institute, Chicago; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Hirshhorn Museum & Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; the Tate Gallery, London and many others. Additionally his public sculpture can be seen in over 40 cities around the world including Honolulu, Los Angeles, Miami, New Haven, New York, Oklahoma City and Philadelphia. Alexander Liberman died in November of 1999 at the age of 87. - Courtesy of Mitchell-Innes & Nass About Barbara Rose: Barbara Ellen Rose (June 11, 1936 – December 25, 2020) was an American art historian, art critic, curator and college professor. Rose's criticism focused on 20th-century American art, particularly minimalism and abstract expressionism, as well as Spanish art. "ABC Art...
