Antique oil on canvas painting depicting St. John the Baptist. Tuscany XVIIIsec

About the Item

Antique oil on canvas painting depicting St. John the Baptist. The painting depicts St. John the Baptist, seated next to a snow-white lamb, his unfailing iconographic attribute, near a gushing stream of water. The young saint is half-covered by a red-colored mantle and holds the reed cross on which will later be wrapped the white scroll intended to accommodate the inscription "Ecce agnus Dei ecce qui tollis peccata mundi." One of the most popular and most revered saints of the Christian faith, St. John the Baptist is considered the forerunner of Christ, for once he grew up he devoted himself to a hermit-like existence in the desert, preaching conversion and baptizing his disciples on the banks of the Jordan River, so much so that even Jesus went to him to receive baptism. The work exhibits remarkable pictorial finesse with perfect stage construction, a particularly vivid natural opening that plunges into a wooded landscape, so much so that it elicits complete involvement from the viewer. Analyzing the canvas,it shows a happy synthesis with the Tuscan tradition, both in design and plastic conformation and presents a dense and palpitating color palette. The color tones are bright and this produces a wealth of luminous effects. The painting is enclosed in a carved wooden frame with relief leaves coeval with the same. Condition: Very good Condition. Measurements: 75x100cm. Provenance: Tuscany 18th century.
