Pantomime, 2015
acrylic and mirror on canvas
59 1/2 x 47 inches
Pantomime is part of a new body of work called "The Masks". Joyce is an artist who explores the space between vernacular visual idioms and geometric abstraction through various combinations of mediums and formats. In The Masks, a theatrical mix of painting and sculpture populate the exhibition, with works that mine twentieth century art history, universal symbols, and the 16th century Italian theater form commedia dell’arte, all in one breath. The works in the exhibition reference components of a set or characters in a play; portals, mirrors and frames set the stage, with works titled as characters such as La Mere, La Pere, Juggler, Pantomime, Harlequin and Leonora. The tension between repetition and improvisation are central to the exhibition.

Emily Joyce
Emily Joyce was born in 1976 and educated at the Glasgow School of Art and the Rhode Island School of Design (BFA 1998). Joyce’s paintings investigate mathematics and its resonance in the natural world as well as art history through pattern-based and rhythmic abstraction. Her paintings often have a spark of humor and playfulness via purposefully awkward gestures or anomalies added to humanize the rigorous geometry that is the foundation of her work. Joyce has exhibited work and participated in projects at Human Resources (Los Angeles), Machine Project (Los Angeles), Hauser and Wirth (Los Angeles), Inman Gallery (Houston), The Berkeley Art Museum and Pacific Film Archive (Berkeley), The Tang Teaching Museum (Saratoga Springs), and the Palais de Tokyo (Paris), and more.

- In the middle of the roadBy Dana FrankfortLocated in Houston, TXDana Frankfort In the middle of the road, 2017 oil on canvas over panel 48 x 48 x 1.75 inches For over two decades, Dana Frankfort has explored the vexing periphery between language and sight by painting words. Rather than laying claim to the paintings, controlling their semiotic pulse, her words serve as the formal armature; they prop up, ventilate, and allow the many layers of paint to breathe. Imperatives, allusions, evocations—the words dissolve into a palimpsest of obscured serifs and stems, into color and form. The title of the work is a phrase from a poem by Carlos Drummond de Andrade’s “In the Middle of Road.” Here it is, translated from the Portuguese by Elizabeth Bishop...Category
