Kate Brett
Ticket office - contemporary modern abstract figurative ceramic painting object

2020

About the Item

Ticket office is a unique contemporary modern wall object by British artist Kate Brett. This one of a kind object consists of 144 handmade unglazed porcelain elements mounted in a hand painted matt black frame with a white raised edge. At the rear of the frame there is a straight bar with which the work can be hung level on the wall (see sample image). Most images on the porcelain elements are transfer printed details of photos taken by the artist herself, complemented with various other techniques such as painting and drawing. The firing of the porcelain is done after, permanently fixating the graphic images. In any space, private or business, her works are true eye-catchers and conversation pieces! Kate Brett (1963, UK) graduated with a BA in Three Dimensional Design and then went on to complete an MA in Fine Art Print from the Wimbledon College of Art in London. She then established her practice as an independent artist working from her studio in South West London and also holds a position as a Fine Art tutor at the Mander Portman Woodward College in London. Her work is mainly derived from images of commuters or sections of graphics taken on the road, in stations or at airports and offers a fleeting glimpse of the transient nature of our lives. Her compositions create a sense of city life – a snippet of conversation, body language, a pigeon picking its way through the complexity of relationships both physical and human; graphic images dividing the space. The reliefs with square elements are about mnemonics, about visual mindmapping in the urban landscape. She encourages to discover a visual diary about an imaginary day or time. The familiarity with a distant figure picking their way through a barrage of text and directions in a map like grid. Her work with round elements is based on the concept of loss and searching. She uses a variety of materials to create a sense of movement within a tight framework, exploring the relationship between empty and crowded spaces. Generally her work is printed and drawn onto high fired porcelain, which is symbolic in its nature of the fragility of our own existence. Recently she has started creating paintings on canvas based on the same concepts as her ceramic works. Kate Brett’s work has been exhibited in Europe and the USA and is part of many private collections. She has also been awarded with prestigious residencies in Sydney, Japan and Berlin.

'I'll Be Back,' by XVALA is a mixed media painting and colorful screen print with iridescent oil stick painting featuring the theme of the 'New World Order.' It was produced in 2015/16. The phrase 'I'll Be Back' is printed on the top and bottom margins of the work with the words 'New World Order' on the top margin. Three heads are stacked in the center of the canvas with the 'all seeing eye' on the top of the head. XVALA's art illuminates the hidden fallout spawned from our high tech Internet age. His 'Fear Google' campaign exposed the decay of privacy and 'No Delete' used hacked nude celebrity photos to highlight loss of control over personal information. The artist has worked with trash from the homes of Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs, and others, as well as dirt from the graves of George Orwell and Aldous Huxley. The dirt appears in the New World Order collection as part of a pyramidal, 3D printed, living ant farm...
