About the Item
A unique, large scale/oversized, expressive artwork, from the Fragments of the Mind series.
This series examines the delicate balance of the mind and the intricacies of our thoughts, our emotions and our mental imagery. We think therefore we are, and the incredible volume of thoughts that we are capable of, create layers and complexities beyond our conscious understanding. And while so many of our thoughts are similar, they are different and unique, in the same way that these panels are similar but different, unique in their layering and complexity.
The artist destroyed (cut to pieces) 50 artworks of his own to create this series.
Material used: Destroyed pieces of art, Silicone, Urethane, Polyurethane to create a 3D effect of textures.

Maico Camilo
Maico Camilo was born in Brazil in 1982. He has travelled extensively, up into Europe and then lived and worked for an extended period of time in New Zealand and Australia. These experiences have opened him up to the different cultures and environments that have helped him explore the larger questions we all face in life: our reason for being. Camilo has set about exploring his own journey through his art, challenging his own paradigms and his reason for being and not being afraid to explore different vocabularies and communication forms through his art. He is challenging us all to confront the obvious, in terms of what is going on around us. What you see is what you get, but is it? How many of us compromise our real self? How many of us fall victim to the perceptions of others, worried about what others think? How many of us truly stand for what we believe in and remain true to ourselves? When you see the complexities in Camilo’s artwork, you see a mirror of the complexities of life. The layers of each work question our own strength of conviction, for what we stand for. Each piece forces the viewer to look elsewhere within the artwork, therefore the viewer will slowly analyze their own response to the work, sensing the intellect that the artwork has to offer.

Since then, Johnson has exhibited widely both nationally and internationally, as well as being a resident at the Ucross Foundation in Clearmont, Wyoming in 2004 and at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris, France in 2002. Johnson uses strategically placed canvas strips to act as dam walls to corral the poured paint and polyurethane mix. Each layer must be sanded vigorously to ensure as much precision as possible. The sanding process gives the surface a unique sheen, while simultaneously transparent and opaque, reminiscent of encaustic. Through Johnson’s process, the layers become diffused and viscously permeable, with crisp edges and a traceable lost-and-found history.
