About the Item
“Forgotten Bedroom” by Alexandra Rozenman is a playful oil painting on canvas measuring 50 x 48 x 2 inches in greens and blues with touches of red and yellow. You see a dark and stormy sky with a bright line of yellow sunset sharply crossing the horizon. A wide green field is reflecting the yellow light turning peaceful olive color. Diagonally across the painting, you see a train track with a grey train taking off. You can feel the motion and hear the whistle. It makes you wonder and asks questions giving you a few clues.
A beautiful rug decorated in blue, orange and green flowers is on the bottom of the painting; it has been left behind and is now there for us to picnic, look at the stars, and wonder why this bedroom has been left behind. What has been forgotten is gathered into a small mountain of stuff on the tracks. A green chair, a dresser and a mirror (reflecting a night sky with stars and a moon), small side tables, an iron, striped blue and white mattress and bright red slippers are all there looking at us. Making us wonder who, why, where and how has left all that behind? Is that nostalgic memory, an immigrant story or a surreal dream? This painting is oil on canvas, initialed on the front and signed, titled and dated on the reverse. Thick 2 inch stretcher is painted grey on the sides.
Alexandra Rozenman immigrated to America from the Soviet Union in 1989. Russian, European and American myths of national destiny and private identity take on a utopian dimension as she absorbs and expresses the psychology of otherness as fundamental aspects of her own identity. She wants her art to be like a well-worn military wool blanket that gives you warmth, love, and history. The artist states: “Whatever degree of abstraction defines my thinking and visual self-identification it has all to do with the search for my own image in a great existential sea of sweeping change”. Rozenman is represented by Fountain Street Gallery in Boston, MA.
