Andy Warhol
Roll Over Mouse

1983

About the Item

Andy Warhol (1928-1987) is arguably the most important American artist of the 20th century. He not only defined Pop Art but had an unrivaled influence on artists and image-making. In the 1950s, Warhol began his career as a fashion or commercial illustrator drawing advertisements for a number of companies selling fashion, footwear, textiles, and books. The artist's early exposure to advertising and image-making for the masses was an important ingredient in his evolution as an artist. While Warhol was frequently obsessed with the culture of his day, he was simultaneously a student and collector of the past. Created in 1983, this charming work on paper comes from Warhol's "Toy Paintings" series where he drew inspiration from his delightful collection of international toys and their packaging. "Roll Over Mouse" reimagines the exterior packaging of a Japanese wind-up mouse by the same name. The artwork captures the toy's animated dynamism while also honoring its nostalgic significance and its important role in American childhood. As with the best of his work, Warhol examines the influence of consumerism at every stage of life, while simultaneously elevating the playful mouse to the status of a cultural icon. Rendered in black and white, this unique work on paper recalls, is almost a sequel of sorts to some of his paintings from the 1960's whose images were pulled from advertisements such as "Before and After 4" or "$199 Television" and "Cooking Pot" As the Warhol market continues to gallop to a stratosphere beyond, there are fewer and fewer examples of pivotal works in circulation. Andy Warhol began using the big-shot Polaroid camera in 1971 and continued using it religiously until he died in 1987. Despite the camera being discontinued in 1973, he continued to use it to capture the actors, artists, dancers, politicians, socialites, and factory members of his world. Frequently, Warhol's polaroids were used as preparatory works for his iconic silkscreen portraits or other artworks. They also revealed his immediate personal vision functioning as a chronicle of his surroundings and social life. In 1977, Warhol began work on two new sexually-charged bodies of work, Torsos and Sex Parts. These two series are regarded as Warhol's most daring, arguably the earliest overtly gay work in his oeuvre. Ultimately, the works in these series served to help Warhol assert his own homosexuality. Sex Parts is a series of photos featuring explicit male and female body parts, blurring the line between art and pornography. The inspiration for these works came from Polaroids that Warhol had shot through a series of photoshoots featuring models from gay clubs...
