Maestro Antonio Savisio drew inspiration from the masterpieces of the great Neapolitan Maestro Salvator Rosa who was the author of great war and cavalry scenes, so much so that he was nicknamed "Salvator of battles".
The battle, a theme dear to Salvator Rosa's pictorial activity, was one of his favourite subjects from his beginnings in the workshops of Jusepe de Ribera and Aniello Falcone, with whom it is possible to establish certain stylistic analogies. The painter, in fact, became famous for his compositions almost always built with a dramatic climax in the centre, a sort of pivot around which the entire scene is structured; and columns of dust rising menacingly in the midst of the fray.
