Excellent figurative oil painting of a man seated in an armchair with papers strewn about the interior space by Charles Ross Kinghan (American, 1895-1984). A working illustration painting of a writer or newsman deep in thought.
Unsigned and unframed. Acquired with other works by the artist. Image size: 24"H x 30"W.
Charles Ross Kinghan was born in Anthony, KS on January 18, 1895. A teacher, he moved to Wichita as a teenager and did sign painting for the Western Sign Works. He studied at the Chicago Academy of Fine Art in 1916, the American Academy of Art in Chicago, the Audubon School of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. He was a pupil of Carl Scheffler, J. Wellington Reynolds, and H.A. Oberteuffer.
He taught at the Art Institute of Chicago and at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. He was an illustrator for McCalls, Good Housekeeping, Saturday Evening Post, Colliers, and many other
magazines. including American Artist magazine.
He was author and illustrator of Rendering Techniques for Commercial Art and Advertising (1956) and of Ted Kautzky—Master of Pencil and Watercolor (1959). Head of the art department at BBDO Advertising Agency in New Rochelle, NY in 1962. One of the founders of the Huguenot School of Art in New Rochelle, NY. Retired in 1962 and moved to Laguna Beach, CA in 1973.

harles Ross Kinghan began his studies in 1916 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Chicago, and studied at the Art Institute and the American Academy of Art*, whose teaching staff he later joined. Also well known as an illustrator, he worked for McCalls, Good Housekeeping, Saturday Evening Post, Colliers and many others. In addition he has contributed many articles dealing with art and art techniques to such magazines as American Artist and The Artist. Mr. Kinghan is one of the founders of the Huguenot School of Art.
A collection of his watercolors was done as a commission for the U.S. Navy Department as part of a goodwill tour throughout the world and now hang in the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C.
Mr. Kinghan was a member of numerous art organizations including The National Academy of Design* as Membership Chairman and on the Board of Directors, the American Watercolor Society*, Allied Artists of America*, the Salmagundi Club,* Hudson Valley Art Association*, Philadelphia Watercolor Club, The Veterans Art Association, and New Rochelle Art Association.
Submitted by Jacques Lamy, May 2004. The information was taken from the back of a Kinghan painting, which was donated to a private high school in the Dallas area and consequently purchased by us during a fund-raising auction. The painting belonged to a friend or pupil of Mr. Kinghan and included a Polaroid picture of Mr. Kinghan with the painting in question on the back of the painting itself.

Irina Belotelkin Roublon, née Roudakoff, was born in Elisavetgrad, Ukraine to the Russian noblesse ancienne, descendant of Catherine the Great, she was a student at the Mariinsky Noble Ladies' Institute , Novocherkassk, Russia. She was orphaned at the time of the Russian Civil War after her father, General Paul Roudakoff, was fatally wounded in battle; 5 days later her mother died of typhus. Still unaware of her parents' death, and after witnessing her two sisters' deaths from starvation, the young Irina, then 8 years old, made her way over 1,000 kilometers, alone and through many privations to Moscow and the Estonian embassy there, with whom her Estonian uncle Volodya Blonsky had made arrangements. After a year in Moscow, and appeals to the Estonian consul, Irina was aided in a dramatic escape from the Soviet Union, to her aunt Anna Blonsky Lassburg (1882–1940) and her husband Doctor Genrick Lassburg in Tallinn, Estonia. Eventually, after in 1929, traveling through Ellis Island and admitted as a student, of voice studies, she joined her brother who had settled, in 1923, in the United States. Irina came to San Francisco during the Second World War, Among Irina's devotions were ballet and opera. She often entertained friends Rudolf Nureyev, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Sergei Leiferkus when they were in town. Natalia Makarova and Yuri Possokhov were often guests at Irina's Russian Christmas and Easter parties. From the early 1960s through the late 1980s, Irina studied and prolifically created still life and portrait paintings in oil and water color, excelling in flower compositions. She held studio and feature exhibitions; she competed and won prizes. Her work is in holdings throughout the San Francisco Bay area, Europe and Russia. In 1965 she undertook private study with two prominent Russian painters, including Serge Ivanoff; she executed a portrait of her two masters. She cherished her portrait as executed by Serge Ivanoff.
