About the Item

Publications: - Expertise by Prof. Sandro Bellesi; - S. Bellesi, in Pittura e Scultura a Firenze (secoli XVI-XIX), Florence 2017, p. 111. Matteo Bonechi (Florence, 1669 – 1756) was an Italian painter of the late Baroque period and he was mainly active in Florence. The background in this artwork is characterised by thunderclouds that are approaching the group of various characters depicted in the main scene. The characters illustrated are trying to swim or float in a stormy sea, while joyful putti are flying above them. The painting represents a seascape which depicts two horses of the sea pulling a large shell over which stands a man, who can be identified as Neptune, the Roman god of freshwater and sea. He is surrounded by other creatures of the sea, including mermaids and Tritons. The play of light and shadow which characterises the scene is evidence of the fact that the painting had been created as a preliminary model for a mythological fresco that should have contained a wider scene.
