Paton Miller
Illustrated Man

2020

About the Item

A mixed media painting showing a seated man with tattoos. In “Illustrated Man” we see a single figure, covered in tattoos; portraits, designs, and patterns coat the man's skin from torso to fingertips. His face remains pure, unscathed from any ink marks; clear-headed and gazing forward. Behind him, Miller presents an obscure tapestry of civilization, an empire of sandy structures under a lapis lazuli night sky. Winding roads lead to city walls, while shadows and foundation-lines melt into creatures; a toothy alligator appears out of a stone façade – perhaps a ghost from ages-old legends, or a figment of one’s imagination. To the left, a fresco of overlapping faces take shape; perhaps giving likeness’s to the generations of the metropolis's inhabitants over time. The “Illustrated Man” sits upon an abstract plane of blue and white paint – which gives the impression of outer space. Resting on this plane, the man cruises from ancient civilization, onward. This item came directly from the artist's studio and has never been owned. It has however been intentionally distressed and made to look as if it could have a long and rich history, much like the indigenous cultures around the world that influence Paton's work. The patchwork style of collage that Paton uses is unique, intentional and has been perfected over the course of his career. Pieces of paintings on panel and canvas have been adhered and in some places literally nailed together to create this final product. Frame built around artwork, dark grey painted wood. Dimensions 72in x 82in Paton Miller, b.1953, in Seattle,Washington, raised in Hawaii has made his home in Southampton since 1974. Paton is in the permanent collections of Guild Hall, The Parrish Art Museum, The Heckscher Art Museum and others. One of the most collected artist on Eastern Long Island, Paton has had over 25 solo exhibitions in NYC and many exhibitions on the West Coast, Europe and Asia. Paton has curated 6 East End Collected exhibitions at the Southampton Arts Center and was asked by the Heckscher Museum in Huntington, NY, to co- curate their sentential exhibition in 2020.

Painted from life, a subtle and colorful seascape. The South Ferry runs across the Peconic Bay, from North Haven, Sag Harbor, to Shelter Island. A humble spot in New York's famous Hamptons. Signed: Angel Ramiro Sanchez Angel Ramiro Sanchez was born in 1974 in Maracaibo, Venezuela. At age six was accepted with full scholarship into the Instituto the Niños Cantores del Zulia, school for musically gifted children. At age fourteen he began five years of apprenticeship with the realist painter, Abdon J. Romero, an eminent specialist in murals for churches and public buildings. In 1993, a study grant from Mgr. Gustavo Ocando Yamarte, Founder the Niños Cantores, enabled him to travel to Florence, Italy, where he studied at the renowned Accademia di Belle Arti, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1997. At the same time, he was enrolled at The Florence Academy of Art,founded by painter Daniel Graves, where he received a diploma in Painting. Ramiro was appointed senior painting instructor at The Florence Academy of Art in 1997, and is currently Director of the Advanced Painting Program. • CELLO IN THE SNOW - oil, enamel, glazed ceramic and canvas on panel, textural
    By Eleanor Aldrich
    Located in Signal Mountain, TN
A cello is held up between the legs of its accompanying musician in a snowy landscape. Snow has collected on the protruding bits of Cello and on the tops of the musician's knees. Though we can't see the face of the musician, we see their bare arms, folding upwards, as if they have buried their face in their hands. -- Building on her previous show, Main Squeeze, which featured bodies pressing through the grid of lawn chairs, in “That Feeling When,” Aldrich expands the excess of materials to large figure paintings...
