Peter Lupkin
Father and Son - Original Oil Painting, Two Seated Figures Against a Yellow Wall

2018

About the Item

This piece is exploring the dominating and overshadowing presence that many parental figures can have upon their children. The boxer, Marcus, often brought his young son with him when he came to pose. While I was experimenting with different postures for Marcus's portrait the young son also asked to be painted. During the process of this portrait I went back through some initial reference photos and saw that the son had posed identical to the father by his own inclination. This revelation, and my interaction with them, led to the creation of the painting. In the work you can see the shadow is obliterating part of the boy, and spatially the son cannot exist next to the father. Peter Lupkin Father and Son oil on canvas 60h x 48w in 152.40h x 121.92w cm PLU027 The artwork I create is a visual statement of my moral philosophy. The language I use to convey this philosophy in my pieces is one of traditional symbolism, this being indoctrinated into my personality through an apprenticeship into a traditional stained glass studio at the age of 14 and continuing to the present day. I seek to create scenes and narratives that are at the same time realistic and fantastical. I often use pre-existing stories when I am developing an image. I will then take these narratives and expose a less studied side of them, or try to bring them into a contemporary context. Ultimately my goal is to use modern imagery in conjunction with traditional techniques and connect them with contemporary society, showing both the narrative’s and the method’s continued relevance.
