Sasja Wagenaar
''Japanese Porcelain'', Dutch Contemporary Still Life Painting of Porcelain

2023

About the Item

When you look at this painting "Japanese Porcelain" by Dutch artist Sasja Wagenaar (1959) from a distance you see a perfectly painted image, but up close a generous paint streak is visible. She has a unique way of applying shadow and light effects in her paintings. Sasja Wagenaar is inspired by our classic masters from the seventeenth century, a flourishing period in Dutch painting. The century in which new continents, markets and arts were discovered. At that time in the Netherlands it was a real fad to collect chinoiserie. Originally porcelain, but also Dutch pottery, also known as Delft blue, inspired by Chinese and especially by Japanese bowls and vases. For Sasja, a still life - or, as it is called in the literature: Nature Morte - is not death, but life. She paints life caught in tranquility. To quote Sasja Wagenaar: ‘Every platter, every bowl is already so much in itself. They were made with great care and went through hundreds of hands before they ended up here. Their character must be respected in composing the story that forms a still life'. Although rooted in the 17th century Dutch tradition, her work shows her very own signature and is contemporary. As a true Modern Dutch Master Sasja knows how to nourish silence and well-being in extraordinarily serene compositions. She paints 'living' models, she doesn’t use photography and she uses acrylic, which is also a reference to our time. She signs every painting with a beautiful ‘W’, always aware of the strive that the next work will hopefully be even closer to her absolute ideal. The ideal, the motor one has to lead a meaningful life, for Sasja Wagenaar, is the painting of tomorrow.

When you look at this painting "Sprats" by Dutch artist Sasja Wagenaar (1959) from a distance you see a perfectly painted image, but up close a flowing movement of the paint streaks is visible. Sasja Wagenaar has a unique way of applying shadow and light effects in her paintings. The strong reflection on the dark background is a reference to the camera obscura. This dark room was used since the 16th century by Old Masters (such as Vermeer, as is presumed) to create a detailed reflection of an object. Sasja Wagenaar is inspired by our classic masters from the seventeenth century, a flourishing period in Dutch painting. The century in which new continents, markets and arts were discovered. • Challenger
    By James Oliver
    Located in Philadelphia, PA
"Challenger" is an original painting on canvas by James Oliver measuring 40in x 60in. James Oliver is a painter whose precise visual language pushes the tradition of twentieth century abstraction into a contemporary context. Oliver is a conceptually driven formalist whose work is inspired by his dreams and emotional states, which he abstracts into an undetermined and subjective viewing experience by emphasizing line, color, and form. Even as Oliver turns to a figurative practice in recent series, rendering cultural icons like chopper bikes, Pontiac Firebirds, and his childhood poodle in detailed line drawings, these representations similarly evoke broadly accessible affects abstracted from his mental landscape. Born in Upstate New York, raised in San Juan, Puerto Rico, son of an advertising executive, Oliver was exposed from a young age to visual art from its most commercial applications to more visceral exponential lives. "The Challenger is a classic muscle car. Knowing that I have been working on a series of muscle car paintings...
