Vintage 1940’s Circus Acrobat Oil on Canvas Painting. Unique modern style.

About the Item

This is a highly stylized circus acrobat scene. Done “en grissille” or shades of grey, it portrays an acrobat on a trapeze high above the crowd, abstractly shown lower right. The stark composition, enhanced by the theatrical lighting really makes this a special piece. The top hat, hovering through mid air, adds a Hollywood touch to the scene. It seems to exhibit very late art deco styling. It very well may be signed, lightly and in an arc format, lower right. It possibly reads “WAINWRIGHT”. The painting fully appears to date ca. 1940, or just thereafter. The work is oil on canvas and measures 16” x 16”. Its painted wood frame is original and of a very nice profile that reflects the scene and also shows late art deco influences. Overall, the frame measures 19 1/4” x 19 1/4”. The painting has recently had a cleaning and a very small amount of inpainting in spots. All of the restoration work was professionally done and it shows well. The frame is basically untouched and as stated, original and of the period. This is a very unusual piece and could be a wonderful addition to anyone’s collection.

  • Rare Baltimore Harbor Oil Painting, Pratt Street Dock, ca 1950 - Rosalie Hamblin
    Located in Baltimore, MD
This lively oil painting depicts Baltimore’s busy waterfront, specifically the former piers that lined Pratt Street in the Inner Harbor. Painted by local artist Rosalie Mills ( née Hamblin), the scene depicts the watermelon boats that berthed near Pier 5. The painting dates to the 1950’s. The historic buildings that once lined Pratt Street, before urban renewal clearance of the 1960’s, provide the background for the scene. Hamblin’s attention to detail is quite good and calls to mind other Baltimore painters...
