A quiet street of San Miguel de Allende in Mexico is the subject of this painting by Carole Garland. An elderly woman cautiously makes her way along a narrow path using a tree to lend support. The orange wall provides much needed shade in the afternoon heat. Light seeps through the branches of a colorful bougainvillea patterning the orange bulwark. Artist Carole Garland who studied art in both San Miguel de Allende and Mexico City shares her appreciation of the simplicity of this quiet backstreet in a Mexican town. A special moment in time is brought to life. Garland uses the scumbling technique and a paint laden palette knife to achieve texture and depth in the leaves, the branches and the rough pavement of the street. This oil on wood panel is 16"x20" and its natural wood sides serve as a frame. The painting is wired for easy hanging. This is a stand-alone artwork but was conceived as a companion piece to Orange Wall of San Miguel #1. Together they are 16"x 40". Signed oil on original canvas figures in landscape circa 1930 by French post impressionist painter Lucien Genin. The work is centred around the Porte Saint-Denis - a triumphal arch located in Paris, France. The street is bustling with city-goers and cars pass by the tall buildings painted in red, yellow and white. He first studied at the art school in Rouen, then in 1919 entered the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He settled in Montmartre early in the 1920s, and in 1936 moved to the Latin Quarter. Although he had received a thorough training, he created his own completely spontaneous technique aiming at approaching his subjects with a fresh look. Beside a few views of Rouen, Lorient, Dinan and Villefranche-sur-Mer, Génin specialised in the popular theme of views of Paris. He worked swiftly, making rapid jottings, and thus could produce many paintings. At auction his pictures were sometimes sold in lots. He painted both in oils and in gouache.
