Adolph Kronengold
Adolph Kronengold (1900-1986) - Alaska Landscape Oil on Board, ca 1940’s

1940’s

About the Item

Adolph Kronengold was born in New Orleans in 1900. He studied locally at Tulane, before moving on to New York and Philadelphia. There he studied at the Art Students League and the Pennsylvania Academy and further on to Paris to complete his art education. He returned to the United States and was known to have established art schools in New York and the Alaska Territory. In 1952, he returned to New Orleans and set up a yet another school there, painting scenes of the local architecture and culture. He died in that city in 1986, after a career of over 60 years. This landscape painting seems certainly to be from his Alaska period. It dates to ca 1940’s and the scene features a northern forest with views to higher snow covered mountains. It’s a colorful summer day with the river running freely and sun fully out. The work showcases Kronengold’s post-impressionist used of paint and brushstrokes as well as his ability to construct an energetic composition from nature. The painting is oil on board and measures 16” x. 20”. It is signed lower right. The frame is a fairly ornate frame of the World War II era, before more modern styles became popular. It measures 20 1/4” x 24 1/4” at its widest points. Both the painting and the frame are in very good condition. The work is ready to hang on the wall or location of your choice.

  • Lovely Antique European Cathedral Garden Oil Painting, Unsigned, ca 1920
    Located in Baltimore, MD
Although seemingly unsigned, this European Cathedral setting was painted by a well-trained artist. It dates to around 1920, about one hundred years ago. The summer scene is a back garden to a large cathedral and probably in Italy. Often, European churches and cathedrals have contemplative gardens that are off to the side or behind the grand edifices that are usually busy with people. This seems to be the case in this painting. A single statue with a backdrop of cypress trees provides a calm respite along a winding path to the historic church beyond. The artist chose this space to paint a reflective scene while still showing off some of the grandeur of the church and likely cathedral beyond. The Renaissance or Baroque buildings are very nicely rendered in a somewhat Impressionist manner. The overall composition with its vertical format is quite unique and alluring. It could certainly remind the viewer of similar scenes that were witnessed on past trips to Europe. The painting is oil on canvas and measures 12 1/2” x 18”. It has a wood gold frame with simple architectural lines that seem to frame it nicely, without being fancy or overbearing. Overall framed dimensions are 16” x 21 1/2”. The painting is in very good condition with no apparent repairs or damage. There is a small vertical mark below the statue, but that isn’t too noticeable, as is the vague vertical streak in the bottom lower right on the paint surface. That may be a thin varnish drip from years ago. The frame is generally in good condition with very minor discolorations in a few spots. All in all, the paintIng presents very well as an antique from Europe...

Signed oil on original canvas figures in landscape circa 1930 by French post impressionist painter Lucien Genin. The work is centred around the Porte Saint-Denis - a triumphal arch located in Paris, France. The street is bustling with city-goers and cars pass by the tall buildings painted in red, yellow and white. Signature: Signed lower left Dimensions: Framed: 27"x31" Unframed: 20"x24" Provenance: Private French collection Lucien Génin came from a family of stone-cutters. He first studied at the art school in Rouen, then in 1919 entered the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. He settled in Montmartre early in the 1920s, and in 1936 moved to the Latin Quarter. Although he had received a thorough training, he created his own completely spontaneous technique aiming at approaching his subjects with a fresh look. Beside a few views of Rouen, Lorient, Dinan and Villefranche-sur-Mer, Génin specialised in the popular theme of views of Paris. He worked swiftly, making rapid jottings, and thus could produce many paintings. At auction his pictures were sometimes sold in lots. He painted both in oils and in gouache. Lucien Génin showed work at the Salon d'Automne in 1926 and 1930. His work featured at the Marcel Aymé and the Painters exhibition, Galerie Roussard...
