Antoine Bouvard Snr.
A gondolier on a Venetian canal at sunset

About the Item

Antoine Bouvard is renowned for his captivating depictions of Venetian canal scenes. His works, characterized by warm tones and a gentle, hazy light typical of sunset settings, have left an enduring impact. One of his notable pieces, "A Gondolier Before a Venetian Bridge," exemplifies his realist style, capturing the grand canal of Venice in a manner that consistently appealed to tourists. Born in 1870 in St. Jean-de-Bournay, L'Isere, France, Bouvard studied at the Academy of Beaux-Arts in Paris. His artistic journey was significantly influenced by Félix Ziem, a French painter acclaimed for his poetic portrayals of maritime scenes and port cities. A key figure in Bouvard's career was the French architect Constant-Dufeux, with whom he formed a friendship that shaped both his professional trajectory and aesthetic preferences. Beyond his artistic pursuits, Bouvard served as the director of architectural services for the Seine, contributing notably to the construction of the Bourse du Travail in Paris. Despite being based in Paris, he frequently traveled to Italy, particularly Venice, to paint directly from observation. Bouvard, opting for a more private approach, preferred to sell his works through dealers rather than maintaining a public profile. His artistic legacy extended to his son, Noel Bouvard, who followed in his father's footsteps, becoming a landscape painter with a style reminiscent of Antoine's. The senior Bouvard passed away in 1956, leaving behind a body of work that continues to be appreciated for its enchanting portrayal of Venetian scenes and its influence on subsequent generations of artists.

Beside a few views of Rouen, Lorient, Dinan and Villefranche-sur-Mer, Génin specialised in the popular theme of views of Paris. He worked swiftly, making rapid jottings, and thus could produce many paintings. At auction his pictures were sometimes sold in lots. He painted both in oils and in gouache.
