Antonio DeVity"Parisian Street Scene Arc de Triomphe" Post-Impressionist Oil Paint on CanvasMid-20th Century
Mid-20th Century
About the Item
In this piece, the artist depicts his subject in an abstract and impressionistic way, capturing the Arc de Triomphe busy street scene from the 20th Century with much life. The artist mostly used oil with a pallet knife, with impasto paint, and then by using subtle brush strokes with a wide color pallet, a beautiful rendition of the street with figures is accomplished. This piece is executed whimsically, yet dramatically evoking an emotion of wonder and beauty. The painting is stamped by the artist studio on verso and it comes housed in an antique ornate giltwood frame with hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed.
Art measures 10 x 8 inches
Frame measures 16.5 x 14.5 inches
Antonio DeVity was a pseudonym used by the Italian artist Umberto Marone (1901–1993) born in Reggio-Calabria City on February 1901. His life can be described with a few sentences: his big passion for painting and art, and his great love for Paris, the city where his grandmother was originally from. His father was a very well known painter in Naples at the beginning of 1900, and he introduced young Antonio to the world of art. Antonio lived in Rome where he was taught by Balla, and also he attended Naples Liceo d'Arte and at the age of 17 he moved to his beloved Paris, in a small attic room near Place Saint-Michel, where he became friend and admirer of many well known Parisian painters of that time.
In those years he had the opportunity to attend the “École des beaux arts”, and to appreciate those places that were often represented in his paintings, including Notre Dame, the Café de la Paix and the Moulin Rouge among others. During his time in Paris he first started using the pseudonym name "Antonio DeVity". This choice along with giving homage to his beloved Paris, contributed to creating an aura of mystery about the painter. After his return to Naples, Umberto founded a School which rapidly became a prestigious Art Studio, which constituted an important meeting place for artists from Southern Italy. In 1950, as soon as he was able to, he opened his art studio in Naples that in less than 10 years became a very important meeting place for Neapolitan artists. During the 1960's DeVity art studio became one of the most important Neapolitan school, with more than 20 painters who studied with him, and in the late 1960s, the Art Studio was directed by Umberto's son Achille.
Antonio DeVity's first exhibitions dated back to 1953 in Bruxelles, 1955 in Marrakech, 1956 in Madrid, 1957 in Morocco and the followers especially in France, between Paris and other big cities. His works were present at many exhibitions in Paris and Rome and also many of his pieces can be found in private collections and at the picture galleries at Rome, Paris, Bern, Naples, Florence. He spent his later life in Naples until his death in 1993 and the art studio was closed a few years earlier of his passing.

Can be matched to make a pair with another painting by Henri-André Martin that we offer on 1stdibs whose title is "Henri-André Martin Road in the Alpilles, Provence, Oil on Canvas, 1980s". Born in Lyon in 1918, the child and the adolescent Henri-André Martin spent his youth in Saint-Étienne, his father, Edme Martin, first installed as a practicing doctor in Lyon, having been appointed doctor of the anti-tuberculosis dispensaries of the Loire. During his first years of studying medicine in Lyon, he nevertheless enrolled in the Beaux-Arts. Appointed hospital intern upon his return from captivity in 1942, he ended his medical career as director of the otolaryngology university clinic at Édouard-Herriot hospital. But painting was his passion. Painting was for Henri-André Martin the way of expressing his feelings. By nature very reserved and of an extreme modesty that many took for coldness, it was what allowed him to express his strong artistic sensitivity and, his pictorial periods are as many reflects of his anxieties, of his hopes, of his joys. At every period of his life, wherever he goes and whenever he has a moment, he paints gouaches, often of small size, but sometimes of larger size. He also paints beaches that have been compared to those of Boudin. Their invoice shows, however, that this figure is only appearance and that in fact, these beaches made of water, sky and sand, readily dispense with the motif, the work of the material seeming to have more importance. as the subject. Despite the fact that until the 1970s he painted "on the ground", his canvases remain far removed from the anecdote. Often harsh like the landscapes of Provence, the Parisian walls which express concern, or the railways, the switch tracks which suggest, in ocher and black, all the embarrassment of choice. We find the same nostalgic gravity in the canvases of the carcasses of boats which, as his friend Louis Pons later wrote, "seem to die of immobility" or in the canvases of Venice, or the landscapes of Eygalières. In the following years, his painting became simpler, more synthetic, such as these landscapes with tortured almond trees, black and gnarled olive trees, plane trees standing out against the ocher sky of the dawn of Provence, in winter. These are also the canvases of Hamburg in the dough becomes heavier, the colors darken, marking all the gravity of the port landscapes. Workshop work gradually takes precedence over motif painting. The pivotal period coincides with that of his work on the olive tree, during which he leads the realization of the "Trunks", a collection of six lithographic plates, of the book L'olivier comprising many lithographs and serigraphs, but also texts. poetic and numerous paintings. He then became passionate about everything related to the olive tree (literature, painting, traditions, history), but also to the tree itself, its thousand-year-old history, its poetry, its symbols, but also its culture, its size. oil production...Category
