Campbell Archibald Mellon
'Cattle Grazing and Sailing Boats' an antique oil painting on Panel

About the Item

Campbell A. MELLON Oil on Panel Picture Size: 15 x 18.5" (37.5 x 46.25cm) Outside Frame Size: 21 x 24.5"(52.5 x 61.25cm) A fantastic example of a rare landscape by Campbell Mellon. There is wonderful impasto which captures natural light giving a three dimensional effect to the already beautifully painted highlights within the painting. 1878 - 1955 Campbell Archibald Mellon was born in Berkshire on 16 June 1878. He married and settled in Nottingham in 1903 and remained there until he died in Gorleston on 28 August 1955. He only started painting following his move to Nottingham. Mellon studied under Carl Brennir, nephew of Benjamin Williams Leader amongst other artists. After his arrival in Norfolk he studied under Sir John Alfred Arnesby Brown RA. Although Mellon’s worked out of doors, his paintings were believed to be largely composed in the studio, as he re-arranged and eliminated detail he didn’t see fitting and added design to suit his ideas. He was more interested in composing an image that conjured up the atmospheric qualities of happiness rather than a sober pictorial translation of what he had seen. After serving in the First World War Mellon moved to the town of Gorleston in Norfolk and he became well known for these seaside scenes with a mass of clearly defined people. He loved to paint the beach at Gorleston whilst looking into the sun and the play of light on the sand fascinated him. Mellon’s work can be seen in public galleries in Bristol, Leeds, Sheffield and Great Yarmouth.

  • Bathing in the Forest
    By Victor Gabriel Gilbert
    Located in St. Albans, GB
Victor Gilbert 1847 - 1933, French Oil on Panel A magnificent work by Victor Gilbert and one for all collectors. This is a rare and important example on a grand scale that is scarcely seen. Artist's very rarely painted on beautiful mahogany panels as large as this as they were too expensive and very hard to buy. The fact that Gilbert did this highlights the significance of this work. Panel Size: 45 x 26" (114 x 66cm) Outside Frame Size: 52 x 33" (132 x 84cm) Free Shipping Victor Gilbert’s natural ability as an artist was recognized early, but his family lacked the financial resources to send the young man to the École des Beaux-Arts. Rather than enrolling in the École, Gilbert was apprenticed to Eugene Adam as an artisan painter and decorator. His only formal education was evening classes with Pierre Levasseur at the École de la Ville de Paris. Perhaps it was his early immersion into la vie quotidienne that formed the basis for his later choices of subject matter for his art, that of the markets and streets of Paris. Despite his lack of formal training, Gilbert’s admissions to the Paris Salons of 1873 and 1874 were very well received by audiences and critics alike; at this time he was supported by the dealer Paul Martin, who was an important proponent of the Impressionist movement. Gilbert emerged in the early 1880s as the primary Realist painter to record the French marketplace...

  • After Sunset by the Lake, 1889 by Swedish Artist Anton Genberg, 1889
    Located in Stockholm, SE
Among the treasured classic arts we offer for sale is this stunning painting by the artist Anton Genberg. Born in 1862 to Pehr Jonsson and Anna Genberg, he left an indelible mark on the art world through his magnificent creations. Genberg's life was colored with a passion for exploration, study, and artistic expression. His artistic journey began with studies at the Tekniska skolan in Stockholm from 1882 to 1884, during which he also honed his skills at Oscar Törnås' private painting school. He furthered his education under the tutelage of Per Daniel Holm at the prestigious Konstakademien from 1884 to 1889. During these years, Genberg's exceptional talent was recognized with numerous scholarships and medals. Our painting, dated 1889, transports us to a captivating scene just some minutes after sunset. The canvas is imbued with a beautiful golden glow as the sun's last rays kiss the sky. Amidst a serene lake, the heavenly light reflects, painting the water's surface with mesmerizing shades of purple. In the distance, the landscape is dominated by a mountainous forest, while in the foreground, a stretch of land adorned with bushes creates a sense of depth. The impressionist style comes alive through Genberg's swift brushstrokes, reminiscent of the masterful techniques employed by Rembrandt, with branches delicately etched using the opposite end of the brush. Genberg's fame as a landscape artist was solidified through his enchanting depictions of snow-laden landscapes from Norrland, particularly the majestic "fjällen" (mountains). His art also captured the allure of Stockholm, Dalarna, and his birthplace in Jämtland. Notably, his masterpiece "Vinterafton" earned him a place of honor at the esteemed Nationalmuseum. Beyond his creative pursuits, Anton Genberg was actively involved in the art community. He served as the vice-chairman of the Svenska konstnärernas förening from 1913 to 1918 and held a position on the board of Sveriges allmänna konstförening from 1906 to 1939. His exceptional contributions were recognized when he was elected as a member of the Konstakademien in 1922. Throughout his life, Genberg resided in various places, leaving behind a trail of artistic inspiration. From 1916 to 1924, he lived in the enchanting Villa Wallbeck-Hansen, a masterpiece of national romanticism...
