Charles Martin Powell (1775-1824) C.M. Powell was born in Chichester. He was a seaman this gave him a good knowledge of ships and the sea. He was a self-taught artist, Powell achieved a high level of achievement. He exhibited at both the Royal Academy and the British Institution. The clarity in the drawing of his ships and the detail of his figures were two of his most notable trademarks. While he painted in the 19th century, Powell’s work has a distinctly 18th century feel about it. Powell adopted the Dutch style for many of his paintings. This and his obvious knowledge of Dutch coastal vessels suggests he had a connection with the area at some stage in his life Powell's paintings always have depth and feeling and his seas and ships feature an almost three dimensional aspect. Many of his works can be found in museums and stately homes Free insured delivery, usually within 14 working days We ship worldwide any taxes/customs to be paid for by purchaser. please provide telephone/email details for courier.

Van Strij used these sketches for various paintings. He was inspired by 17th century old masters, in particular Albert Cuyp...
