Christopher Cranch
Autumn Landscape with Boy Fishing

1845

About the Item

Signed lower right. This painting was exhibited in the Christopher Pearse Cranch landscape exhibition in 2007 at the Lyman Allyn Art Museum and published and illustrated in the catalog. Bio: Christopher Pearse Cranch was a landscape, still life, and portrait painter who grew up in Washington DC where his father was Chief Justice of the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia. He studied art briefly with his brother, Edward, who subsequently became a lawyer, and then graduated from Columbian College in DC. From 1835 to 1842, he attended Harvard Divinity School, becoming a Unitarian minister and serving in congregations in Maine, Richmond, Washington, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Louisville, and Boston. Cranch eventually gave up the ministry, and after 1840 dedicated himself to landscape painting. He spent a couple of years in New York City, and in 1846 left for Italy with his wife, Elizabeth De Windt, who encouraged his painting career. They returned to New York City in 1849, but from 1853 to 1863 lived in Paris where Cranch worked diligently on his landscape painting and from where he took sketching trips to Italy, Switzerland and the French countryside. "He was among the first American artists to become an advocate of the Barbizon School* of landscape painting, extolling its virtues in letters published in the Crayon." (Harding, 131) From 1863 to 1873 Cranch was active in New York City, and in spring of 1864, he was advanced to full membership in the National Academy of Design*. He maintained studios on Broadway and in his home at Fishkill, New York, and exhibited regularly at the Academy throughout the 1860s. His last entry at an Annual Exhibition was in 1872. During this time, he was also active with the Artists Fund Society* and the American Society of Painters in Water Color. From 1873 until his death, he and his wife lived in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Cranch continued painting landscapes, but increasingly his interest turned to poetry and art-related essay writing. Credit: askart

Signed and dated 1877. Although born in Jamestown, New York, Mortimer Smith would become well-known as a Detroit architect and artist by the end of the nineteenth century. Little is known of Smith's earlier years; however, scholars speculate that he studied in Oberlin and Sandusky, Ohio before moving to Detroit in 1855. There, the artist flourished and became famous for his crisp landscapes of local scenery, including his beloved winter scenes. In addition to his artistic career, Smith founded a successful architectural firm by the name of Smith, Hynchman and Grylls; Smith's reputation in the visual arts was often overshadowed by his draftsmanship as an architect. Nevertheless, he was a vital force in Detroit's arts community exhibiting his works in venues including the Detroit Art...
