Henri Clamen
1930s French Impressionist Oil of a Garden and Mountain Landscape

About the Item

French Impressionist oil on card view of a garden, forest and mountainscape beyond by Henri Clamen. Though not signed the painting was acquired from the atelier of the artist with other signed works. There is a trade stamp to the back of the card (see photo). A charming view of a garden in full abundance. A typical French garden ladder in the middle of the composition sits before an open gate which leads out to the countryside and mountainscape beyond. Clamen's light, free, impressionist style and his use of colour and texture gives a vivacity and movement to the composition. A little jewel of a painting. The brushwork is very effective and reminiscent of the compositions of Van Gogh from the 1880's

  • Trees in a Landscape French Country Landscape
    Located in Cotignac, FR
A French watercolour on paper landscape by Roger Decaux. The work is signed and dated (as yet undeciphered) bottom right. Presented in a wood frame with cut card mount. A fresh and charming view of trees in a landscape. Decaux has used simple, fluid but strong strokes for this composition. One can feel the influence of 'abstraction of form' that was a part of his later work. The eye is drawn from the trees to the surrounding fields, the touches of colour to the right and then to the silhouette of the hills beyond. The use of watercolour at its best. Roger DECAUX was born in 1919 in Dombasle sur Meurthe in the Lorraine. He studied art in Paris with Gino Severini and Jan Brusselmans...

  • Mid Century Tonalist Landscape of California Country Road
    Located in Soquel, CA
Beautiful tonalist landscape of California foothills and country road. Signed and dated "CKP" and "'69" lower right corner. Presented in rustic wood frame with eggshell mat under nonglare glass. Image size: 18.25"H x 13.25"W. Framed size: 23.5"H x 18"W. California Tonalism was art movement that existed in California from circa 1890 to 1920. Tonalist are usually intimate works, painted with a limited palette. Tonalist paintings are softly expressive, suggestive rather than detailed, often depicting the landscape at twilight or evening, when there is an absence of contrast. Tonalist paintings could also be figurative, but in them, the figure was usually out of doors or in an interior in a low-key setting with little detail. Tonalism had its origins in the works of the French Barbizon school and in the works of American painters who were influenced by them. California Tonalism was born when the emphasis in California landscape painting passed from the grand landscapes of works like those of Thomas Hill and William Keith's early career, to more intimate views of a domesticated landscape. At the same time, the parallel Pictorialist Photography...
