About the Item

Louis Aimé Japy (1840-1916) Oil on canvas Cows in river with village in background Signed lower right, Japy. Canvas 26” x 32” Overall in a period gilt frame 38” x 44”. A student of François-Louis Français and of Corot, Louis-Aimé Japy made his Salon debut in 1864, during the height of the Barbizon movement. He made trips to Italy early in his career, as was customary for a young artist, but it was the regions of his native Doubs and the Jura that most captured his heart: these regions inspired most of his compositions. Japy exhibited his views of the French countryside regularly at the Salon, medalling in 1870, and earning a second class medal in 1873 and gold medals at both of the Expositions Universelles in 1889 and 1900. In 1883 he was made a member of the Société des Artistes Français, earning him exemption from all future Salon jury selection and the ability to exhibit freely at the Salons. He was recognized again in 1906, when he was elected Chevalier of the Légion d’Honneur. His works can be viewed in such cities as Budapest, Langres, Limoux, Manchester, Morlaix, Roanne, St-Etienne, Salford, Washington, D.C. and Amsterdam

    Located in Norwich, GB
An charming 19th century dog painting depicting a mother dogue and her exuberant topsy turvy pups by the farmhouse barns or cowsheds , with a young child given them a fuss! Dating from ca 1860-70, the oil on canvas is unsigned, but bears on the verso a rather special stamp from colour and artists supplies merchant Paul Durand-Ruel (1831-1922). Paul Durand-Ruel is known as the legendary art dealer who launched, almost single handedly, the Impressionist movement. He represented Monet, Pissarro, Sisley, Renoir in his Paris, London and New York Galleries. Like his father Jean Marie Durand, Durand Ruel had started as both a merchant of art supplies, and dealer. Often, these two activities overlapped, as he would supply cash strapped artists who left paintings as security. Paul Durand Ruel was one of the first to discover Barbizon artist...
