About the Item
Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left.
b. 1941, British
Born in the East coastal town of Bridlington in Yorkshire, England, and largely self-taught, Michael Whitehand is one of England’s top maritime artists. He has successfully exhibited his work internationally and his paintings are in important collections, like Britain’s recent Prime Minister, John Major. Whitehand’s style and the quality of his work is reminiscent of Montague Dawson. Just as with Dawson, Whitehand has succeeded in creating atmosphere, excitement and realistic images.

His father was described as a "non conformist dissenter" and his mother was a Quaker – their marriage in an Anglican church resulted in them being disowned by the Society of friends. Leader's father was a keen amateur artist – a friend of John Constable – and Benjamin would often accompany him on sketching trips along the banks of the River Severn.
