About the Item
Large vintage nude portrait oil painting of a woman sitting. This is a gorgeous, colourful and exceptional nude oil painting by Pio Santini, signed in the lower right. A young woman sits for the artist in a bedroom, she grooms her hair, after her bath or shower. The tonal elements of her body are fabulous, layers of creams, peaches and browns carve out a statuesque figure. The use of both brush and knife by the artist adds interest to the eye and texture to the touch. The lilac hues of the chair are echoed in her hair whilst the white robe or towel glistens in impasto thickened texture, lavished by the artist's hand to bring a balanced composition in relation to the white bedding.

Signed: Santini - Pio Santini (1908-1986) Pio was a painter of figure compositions, figures, portraits, genre scenes, landscapes and waterscapes. He showed his talents early in life and at the age of 16 made a sculpture of the head of Dante Alighieri. Count Colonna, a friend of the family, was struck by the quality of the work and commissioned the young Pio to do a bust of him. So impressed by his work, the Count introduced him to the sculptor Carlo Fontana (1865-1956). Later, Pio attended the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome.
In 1933 he moved to Paris Montparnasse area where he lived for more than 50 years.
He held various exhibitions in Rome, Tokyo and Paris and was awarded the

Pio Santini was born on April 17th, 1908 in Tivoli, Italy. He showed precocious artistic taste and gifts, in drawing and painting. In 1933, he moved to Paris, in Montparnasse, the artists' area, where he settled in his first studio. He can be considered a member of the Academy of Paris, a significant artistic movement of the first half of the 20th Century along which Amedeo Modigliani.
While attending the classes of the Estienne School in plastic art, Santini started to attract attention in various Parisian Salons (the Winter Salon, the Independents Salon, and the French Artists one).
WWII, the conflict between his native and his adopted country upset him a lot.
He played a part in the resuming cultural exchanges between France and Italy, by founding, the association "The Romans in Paris" after the war, and by creating the Villa d’Este Prize for about 10 years, rewarding each year a French artist. Later, the "Montparnasse Prize" would reward Italian artists in Paris in the same way.
Devoted to painting, he worked as an art illustrator for edition and press and left us a rich work from this period. In the 1960s, Santini decided to live on his painting. He took an active part in many group exhibitions in France and abroad.
He regularly exhibited in Parisian salons most of which he was a member.
As an assiduous participant in the Salon of the French Artists, he was often rewarded: Great Price of the Salon in 1970, in 1974, gold medal in 1971, Prize-winner of the Ernest Marché in 1974.
Santini lived his last years in Garches, near Paris. He worked there until he died at the age of 78.
Keeping himself a part of the avant-garde of contemporary art, Santini developed a personal work of formal coherence steadily. He is a two-time artist, the beginnings of his career, the Thirties, and his rebirth, the Sixties when the artist can again paint. Between these two periods, WWII badly hit his pictorial growth, yet it had all started auspiciously for the young painter whose determination to be devoted to painting is clearly shown in his self-portrait, 1928. The Thirties, after the revolutions of cubism, abstraction, and surrealism, had made figurative art fashionable again, by the assertion of an aesthetic vitality quite close to Pio Santini’s concerns. His former sculptor talent (Bust of Count Colonna, 1929) can be found in his painting in the proportions and volumes of the bodies.
His nudes have a hedonist vitality in which the animated touch intensifies the sensuality. The chosen subjects are traditional and the approach is deliberately figurative, but the animated touch of Santini, his bold but sure taste for colors, transfigures his iconography. The 1960s triumphing language tended more towards Pop Art, opposite to Santini’s pictorial universe. Modernity wanted then to be synonymous with progress and provocation. These concepts nourished the uncompromising avant-garde ideology. On the other hand, Santini was in keeping with the figurative tradition.

- La Toilette - Post-Impressionist Nude Oil Painting by Georges D'EspagnatBy Georges d'EspagnatLocated in Marlow, BuckinghamshireSigned oil on original canvas nude circa 1914 by French post impressionist painter Georges D'espagnat. The work depict a nude woman standing beside a wash basin in a boudoir. Signature: Signed lower right Dimensions: Framed: 45"x34" Unframed: 37"x26" Provenance: Private collection - Netherlands From the beginning of his career, it was a constant concern of Georges d'Espagnet to assert his originality. His studies at the École des Arts Décoratifs, Paris, did not last very long, for he wanted immediate independence and decided to follow courses in the private academies of Montparnasse. In about 1900, he became acquainted with Maurice Denis, Bonnard and Vuillard, and his collaboration with Denis led to a renewal of religious art in France. In 1903, d'Espagnet was one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne, and was appointed professor in charge of studios at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris, in 1934. He illustrated a number of books: Rémy de Gourmont's Evil Prayers ( Oraisons mauvaises) (1896), The Saints of Paradise ( Les Saintes du paradis) (1898), Simone (1907), Sistine ( Sixtine) (1922); Alphonse Daudet's The Immortal ( L'Immortel) (1930); André Gide's The Pastoral Symphony ( La Symphonie pastorale); Francis Jammes' Clearings in the Sky ( Chairières dans le ciel) (1948). D'Espagnet belongs to the group of artists who made the Courrier Français so successful. The drawings of his which are published in it are strongly expressive and some bear comparison with the designs of the great Renaissance masters. He also contributed to L'Image. He often placed cheerful nudes in a landscape, reminding us that, though he moved away from the Fauves, he retained their freedom of colour and arabesque. He painted many portraits, including those of Albert André, André Barbier, Victor Boucher, Déodat de Séverac, Albert Marque, André Marty and Albert Roussel. He also painted mural decorations, including a wall for the Palais de la Découverte (1937), the ceiling of the Victor Hugo Room in the Palais du Luxembourg (1939), a decorative panel for the Palais de Justice, Toulouse (1941) and interior decorations for private houses. His landscapes are Impressionist in inspiration, and work for a certain sobriety, an intimacy, both in their composition - one, two or three sketched figures and large open spaces - and in the choice of colours and treatment with the special hazy brushstroke that marks his style. D'Espagnet took part in a number of annual Parisian exhibitions, including the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, the Salon d'Automne (from 1903 to 1949, except in special circumstances), the Salon de la Libre Ésthétique, Brussels (1899, 1901), the Berlin Secessionists (1940). He also exhibited at the first Salon de la Société de la Gravure sur Bois. Among other exhibitions were 1912, A Century of French Art ( Centenaire de l'art français), St Petersburg; 1916, Kunstverein, Winterthur; 1918, 1926, Galerie M. Bertheim, Paris; 1930, Contemporary French Art...Category
