Franz Ludwig Kiederich
Woman by the Window with Embroidery Frame

Circa 1930s

About the Item

'Woman by the Window with Embroidery Frame', oil on canvas, by Franz Ludwig Kiederich (circa 1930s). A delightful depiction of a woman, comfortable in her own home, intently working embroidery on a framed canvas. She uses the natural light from the large window overlooking her home's front garden to enable the detailed work. It is summertime and life is idyllic in pre-war Germany. Initialed by the artist: 'FK' on the lower left of the painting. Note on the Condition of this Artwork: Commensurate with its age, this painting shows some cracking and blemishing and is overall, in fair vintage condition. It is in its original vintage frame with nameplate affixed to the lower front as in a museum work. This is a significant work by a historic artist and has been priced very attractively for connoisseurs of this genre of work. Upon request a video of the artwork will be provided. About the Artist: Franz Ludwig Kiederich (1873 - 1950), was the son of the painter Paul Wilhelm Kiederich (1842-1921) and grandson of the painter Paul Joseph Kiederich. From 1890 to 1900 he studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. Until 1902 he was a master student of Claus Meyer and mimicked the style of his romanticised and anecdotal paintings which depict the lives of those 'close to the land'. Later he changed styles in favour of more realistic and less romanticised works. Abandoning the current trends of the period, Kiederich undertook trips through Holland, Belgium, England, France, Italy and Switzerland. Throughout, he concentrated on painting country landscapes and portraits of people as they tended to their agricultural work. He captured these scenes with a sensitive attention to natural light as influenced by the impressionists. In February 1953, the Kunstverein for the Rhineland and Westphalia, led by Hildebrand Gurlitt, honored Kiederich with a memorial exhibition at the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf which was also dedicated to the painters Ernst te Peerdt, Walter Petersen and Max Stern. Kiederich's artworks have become available at European auction houses and are exhibited publicly in the Museum at Düsseldorf, Germany. 'Portrait of Man in Cap', oil on canvas, French School (circa 1960s-70s). This artwork was discovered in the South of France. A splendid portrait it is and is most likely from one of the countries in French-speaking Africa. Most of those countries that speak French are in Western and Central Africa, with others scattered across the continent. Having arrived in Africa from colonial activity, French took on many different forms and maintained use to some degree in nearly two dozen nations. In addition to the continent of Africa, there are many other French speakers...

  • La lecture au jardin (Lesson in the Garden)
    By Georges d'Espagnat
    Located in New Orleans, LA
French Post-Impressionist painter Georges d’Espagnat captures a charming moment between a mother and her child in this vibrant oil on canvas. Rendered with a studied use of complementary colors and bold brushstrokes, the painting showcases the artist's unique Post-Impressionist style. Remembered as one of the most individualistic artists of the 20th century, his distinctive canvases bring together the loose brushwork of the Impressionists and the bold color palette favored by the Fauves. Together, they achieve a vibrant spontaneity that lends itself well to the carefree subjects of the present work. Masterfully composed, La lecture au jardin moves beyond the Impressionist instinct to capture a fleeting moment on canvas. Rather, d'Espagnat succeeds in creating a deep feeling of harmony in the work. Warm colors are perfectly balanced with cool tones, while vertical and horizontal lines are softened by the curves of the foliage and his subjects' figures. Through his simplification of forms and intentional use of color and line, he creates a scene that is carefully designed and thoroughly modern. A similar view of a mother and her child by d'Espagnat is currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York). The Post-Impressionist painter was an individualist since his youth, choosing to forgo traditional schooling in order to independently study the Old Masters in the Louvre. He soon became involved with the most prominent Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters of the age, including Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Paul Signac, who themselves existed outside the traditional norms of French Academic training. In 1891, he exhibited at the Salon des Refusés, and again the following year at the Salon des Indépendants. By 1895, he held his first one-man show in Paris, and just three years later his success earned him a solo show at the prestigious Durand-Ruel Gallery. Between 1905 and 1910 he made several trips to visit Renoir on the Côte d’Azur. Their close friendship resulted in a group exhibition at Marcel Bernheim...
