About the Item
This superb British Old Master portrait is by noted artist Lemuel Francis Abbott. Painted circa 1790, the composition is a half-length standing portrait of a gentleman gazing to his left. There is wonderful detail and brushwork in his facial features and the lace of his cravat. This is a stunning British Old Master portrait and an excellent example of Abbott's work.
Provenance: Sothebys New York 1975
Arthur Ackermann NY Bloomsbury 2009.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 25 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in an ornate gilt frame, 38 inches by 33 inches and in good condition.
Lemuel "Francis" Abbott (1760/61 – 5 December 1802) was an English portrait painter, famous for his painting of Horatio Nelson, 1st Viscount Nelson (currently hanging in the Terracotta Room of number 10 Downing Street) and for those of other naval officers and literary figures of the 18th century.
