UnknownPortrait of Giovanni Morosini (1719 - 1789), Italian school. Late 18th century
About the Item
Portrait of Bishop of Verona Giovanni Morosini (1719 - 1789), Italian school.
Technique: oil on canvas painting, relined canvas.
Late 18th century.
Represents a church man.
The figure of Monsignor Giovanni Morosini is depicted against the background of a monumental column and a curtain that appears to be moving: a typical composition in portraits of illustrious figures starting from the Baroque era and widespread from the time of Rubens until the 19th century.
Born in Venice in 1719. Belonging to the ancient noble Morosini family, his ancestors already included ecclesiastical or political men such as Gianfrancesco Morosini, cardinal and papal legate, or Giovanni Morosini (his namesake), ambassador of Savoy.
Having joined the Benedictines, he was bishop of Chioggia, and later of Verona.
Morosini joined the Benedictines of the Monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore in Venice. Doge Alvise IV Mocenigo appointed him bishop of Chioggia (1770) located in the Venice Lagoon. In 1772 Morosoni obtained the transfer from the doge to the diocese of Verona.
Needs restoration (please see attached photos).
The inscription on the back identifies the man as Bishop of Verona Giovanni Morosin in the late 18th century.
Provenance: heritage of noble Venetian family.
A timeless piece with historical significance.
