The Homemade Hermes Birkin Bag is a sculpture that celebrates the beauty, and status, that the docents of fashion have bestowed upon coveted objects and accessories as such. In a Duchampian gesture of representation, the artist has created an object that has been “elevated to uselessness”, yet reveals much about our society’s infatuation with consumption and materialism. Cast in resin the sculpture becomes an apropos trope of our time, a perfect conversation starter.
Shelter Serra’s paintings, sculptures, and drawings explore mass consumption and cultural identity. He juxtaposes subject matters that are both common and recognizable: a Campbell's Soup Can, a copper plated hat, and a Hermes Birkin bag cast in resin, as examples. By portraying these sculptures of aesthetic contemplation. “Refining an aesthetic and making beautiful objects, whether that be a dress, bag, or sculpture," says Serra, "is a celebration of pure creativity and personal vision.”
Shelter Serra, who is related to minimalist master Richard Serra, has collaborated with the Art Production Fund, Helmut Lang, Converse, and Chanel. Solo exhibitions of his work have been presented at BTW Gallery in Geneva, Anonymous Gallery in Mexico City, Beams B Gallery in Tokyo, and Marlborough Gallery in New York, among other galleries. His work has been included in group exhibitions at institutions such as Philadelphia’s ICA, Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, and Urbis Art Centre in Manchester.

Shelter Serra
Shelter Serra is a multidisciplinary artist whose artworks probe the resonance of imagery and objects he has pulled from the wake of American visual and material culture to reexamine. Serra’s compelling sculptures of ubiquitous or iconic commercial products remade in bronze, resin, copper, or gold, are conspicuous replicas of recognizable forms. Serra’s paintings similarly announce their existence as reproductions of reproductions: halftone dots, hand copied typeface, mimicked printing glitches, the tones of a black and white photograph, or the vibrant colors of a thermograph, signal that the subject has been rendered, filtered through an image-making process employed for a particular end. By reproducing and recontextualizing these images and objects, Serra examines the cultural paradigms which led to their creation and commodification. The utility, absurdity, or desirability of the source image or object is contended with and re-assessed via Serra’s handmade proxies. His recreations provoke a conceptual consideration of the assigned, symbolic status of the original – fashionable, wasteful, threatening, luxurious, lowbrow – they test the limits or longevity of the original’s aura. If Serra’s choice of subject matter is perceived as a commentary on the ‘stuff’ this country generates, it is the viewer who has imposed this subtext. In the form of re-presentations of already manufactured products or reproductions, Serra’s artworks have a symbolic function. They point back to an original, and to the culture that gave that original meaning.

- Concorde Cap, Electroplated Copper Contemporary Art Sculpture by Shelter SerraBy Shelter SerraLocated in Brooklyn, NYConcorde Cap Shelter Serra 5.5”x7”x9” Electroplated Copper 2017 The Concorde Cap is one of an ongoing series of copper electroplated hats. Ranging from Superman to Nascar, the artist chooses hats from all walks of life before distilling through the electroplating process, transforming the once functional hat into an object of contemplation and beauty. Shelter Serra’s sculptures and drawings explore notions of mass consumption and cultural identity. He juxtaposes objects that are both mundane and immediately recognizable: a 40 ounce bottle of malt liquor cast in plaster, a Best Buy cap plated in copper, and a designer handbag cast in resin, to name a few. Casting and plating these objects in unlikely materials—resin, plaster, platinum silicone, and copper—Serra strips them of their intended functionality, thereby highlighting their underlying cultural symbolism and transforming branded products into objects of aesthetic contemplation. “Refining an aesthetic and making beautiful objects, whether that be a dress, bag, or sculpture," says Serra, "is a celebration of pure creativity and personal vision.” His Fake Gun...Category

Analysis of the work Rooted in his time, Richard Orlinski uses materials like resin and aluminum, but also marble, stone and bronze. He works on the brilliance and dullness, transparency and opacity of the materials. The Born Wild concept The stake for Richard Orlinski through the concept "Born Wild" is to transform negative emotions into positive vital impulses, to shift from archaic instinct to a civilized emotion. The vectors of this transformation are the aesthetics of the work, the pursuit of perfection as a sculptor and the viewer's perception. Engaged in making art accessible to all, Richard Orlinski draws on popular imagery of the icons that serve his purpose. Wild Kong Open Mouth on menacing fangs, the resin gorilla...Category

- “Video Editing Keyboard 1 - 2 - 3” (Archeology series) Video Keyboard SculptureBy Daniel FiordaLocated in New York, NYDaniel Fiorda in this new series of sculptures, continues in many ways the themes that have infused his previous work. For the last several years, Fiorda has dealt with technology, obsolescence, with the trail of discarded tech that humanity leaves behind and what it says about us. The new work takes this thematic one step further. These new wall pieces feature barely concealed found objects, almost fully engulfed by concrete, and yet still eerily discernible: industrial gears, computer keyboards, objects that evoke industrial post-digital eras. This piece is a set of 3 artworks that showcases a video editing keyboard on a white background, embedded in resin and they can be arranged for display in a variety of layouts. They come ready to hang with hanging hardware and they are signed by the artist on verso. Art measures 7 x 7 x 1.75 in (each) The overall sense is dystopian rather than apocalyptic. In Fiorda’s previous work, found objects were displayed as if unearthed from a bed of clay by a tacit anthropologist, perhaps decades into the future. A typewriter would be partially buried by dry soil and weathered by the passing of time. The underlying narrative was that of a future civilization unearthing the objects left by ours. Destruction or extinction was implied. In the new work, the obsolete technology is not found but rather engulfed by a new technology. Concrete, as a material and as a technology, has the capabilities to fully encase and envelope. In Fiorda’s new work, uniformity and the appropriation of old/new technology into new structures suggests a historical and technological challenge right around the corner, mirroring the ones in our recent past: the digital age fully replacing the analog world. These astounding sculptures, with embedded objects, are here to examine closely, and make connections between theme, material, and shape. Daniel Fiorda was born in 1963 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Of Italian ancestry, his lineage includes a grandfather highly respected as a wood craftsman, also his father was a craftsman in addition to being a musician and poet. Because a privileged life was not his, there was no university for Fiorda. In the Old World tradition of passing on knowledge from parent to child, he learned about machinery form his father, who recognized his son's talent and encouraged it. With some private tutoring, he began sculpting in high school using found objects. The press reviews of his first exhibit, at age 20, stated that Fiorda had a definite “poetic feeling”. With this encouragement, he continued to pursue his art. After leaving Argentina, he arrived in Miami Beach via a circuitous route and set up his studio in the South Florida Art Center. He has exhibited widely throughout the US including the OK Harris Gallery, Allan Stone Gallery in New York as well as the Heriard Cimino Gallery in New Orleans, Lélia Mordoch Gallery in Paris France and Lilac Gallery in New York City. Daniel was one of the winners in the 7th Annual Sculptures Competition (2003) held at Washburn University in Topeka , Kansas. Selected on the inaugural 2006 Palm Beach International Sculpture Biennale, and exhibited for the 3rd time in Sculpture Key West. He is an alumni Artist of ArtCenter/South Florida.
