A charming still life capturing the artist's working materials.
Born in Islington in 1961, Alan Latter's work is influenced by Bloomsbury Group artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant and Fauvists Henri Matisse and Jean Puy. His paintings are inspired by his love of France which has come from his father, a Printer's Compositer and amateur painter who died in 1965 aged only 32.
Given as a teenager his father's art equipment, art books and paintings he continues today in this vein by primarily using vintage brushes, palettes and frames.
Alan's paintings are as much about the subject as the decorative objects that can be found in the background, often discretely featuring blue, white and red as a reference to occupied France when displays of the Tricolor were forbidden as a symbol of Resistance.
His work records simple scenes and surroundings that exist now but could just as easily be set in the first half of the 20th century, adding a small object or two rooting them in the present. He paints in his Suffolk studio but has also painted in the Charente and the Dordogne where he has accepted several commissions.

- Richard Jerzy Watercolor "Red Chair" Interior with Flowers & ChairBy Richard JerzyLocated in Detroit, MI"Red Chair," though an interior scene, is arranged like a still-life with the furniture and objects slightly off-kilter in the creative manner of Marc Chagall's interiors, the Russian-French artist of Belarusian Jewish origin. These non-fixed objects lend a floating energetic atmosphere and the brilliant colors contribute to the liveliness of this warm inviting interior. Richard Jerzy was a well-known watercolor artist from the Detroit, Michigan area. His signature works were figures and still lives, and many famous Michigan families are collectors. "He was probably the most promising, successful, exciting artist in the state of Michigan," said Miriam Parel, a fellow artist and friend for more than 30 years. He grew up on Detroit's east side and developed an interest in painting as a teenager. He attended Detroit's Center (now College) for Creative Studies.
