Anthony Ackrill
Grapes

2019

About the Item

An antique serving platter with a miniature realist painting by American surrealist artist, Anthony Ackrill. Tiny trompe l'oeil, still-life of loose red grapes and a daisy peeking out of jug. One grape is suspended from a string wrapped around a nail in the top right corner. Anthony Ackrill paints directly onto found objects, seamlessly blending painting and sculpture. Ackrill's paintings are humorous, witty, cleverly strange, and always unique. Anthony Ackrill was born in Alaska in 1958, but spent most of his childhood in Florida and Ohio. He decided to pursue painting at a relatively late age. Subsequently, he studied graphic design, and worked as an art director at an established advertising agency. In addition, he designed his own line of humorous greeting cards, which sold internationally. Following this period, Mr. Ackrill began to study drawing and painting on his own. After winning awards in several local and regional art contests, as well as selling some of his paintings, he sought a more formal education to help develop his talent. Mr. Ackrill found an excellent atelier-styled school for artists in Florence, Italy and enrolled in late 1995, at the age of 37. In his second year in Florence, Mr. Ackrill began teaching anatomy to his fellow students, and then also taught drawing and painting. After five years of painting and teaching in Florence Italy, he returned to Florida, where he now has his own studio. EDUCATION Florence Academy of Art, Florence, Italy 1995-2000 TEACHING EXPERIENCE Instructor of Anatomy, Drawing and Painting, Florence Academy of Art 1996-2000

  • Little Girl and Dog Shovel
    By John Morfis
    Located in Sag Harbor, NY
A trompe l'oeil oil painting of a child's beach shovel. Morfis' incredible realism contrasts the quaint illustration on the shovel. Framed dimensions: 23.5 x 17.5 inches John Morfis was born in Bayville, Long Island in 1976. His humble beginnings made pursuing a career in art difficult and paradoxically necessary. Fixated on making things aesthetically pleasing, John made an extreme departure from his family life when he chose to base his life on art. Surrounded by mechanics, welders, and otherwise trade workers John had a tough time expressing his interest in a world much more utilitarian and much less expressive and impractical. With an extraordinary desire to be an artist and a grant awarded, John was able to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting from the University of Hartford in 1998. While there John studied oil painting under American realist Stephen Brown...
