Mid Century floral still-life of a beautiful summer bouquet, by Ohio artist and Cincinnati Art Academy teacher Myer Abel (American, 20th Century), 1940. Signed and dated "Abel 40" lower right. Exhibited at the Cincinnati Modern Art Society 1941. History of provenance and exhibition on verso. Displayed in a rustic wood frame. Image 22.5" x 16". Profession: Lithographer, painter, teacher, lecturer Studied: Cincinnati Art Academy; Andre Lhote, in Paris. Exhibited: Cincinnati Museum, 1930, 1941; PAFA, 1932, 1934, 1941; 50 Prints of the Year, 1932; International Exhibition,Chicago,1932, 1934, 1936; Golden Gate International Expositon, San Francisco, 1939; Modern Art Society, Cincinnati, 1940 (prize); IBM, 1940 (prize); Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 1945. Comments: Position: teacher, Cincinnati Art Academy, 1930-46. Cincinnati Modern Art Society Founded in Cincinnati in 1939 as the Cincinnati Modern Art Society by three visionary local women, the Contemporary Arts Center was one of the first institutions in the United States dedicated to exhibiting contemporary art.     A whimsical depiction by Martha Walter of an interior morning scene of white and pink roses arrangement in a glass vase on top of a table, and fruit on a decorated plate. In the background, the window overlooking the backyard, with the use of bold colors and strong contrasts makes Walter's work so striking and captivating. The flowers are executed with bold petals and exciting colors and this depiction is a wonderful scene done in her home. As an acclaimed American Impressionist painter and one of the premier female artists to be recognized within the fine arts community of the time, she was known for her bright plein-air beach scenes and domestic portraits. Martha Walter studied under William Merritt Chase and was greatly influenced by the then-established French Impressionists Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Claude Monet, and Eugène Boudin. Walter's works took on a looser style; she also used black paint, a color often excluded by other Impressionists.
