About the Item

This undated, whimsical floral dares the viewer to find patterns, and its two-dimensional presentation evokes native and indigenous art and the printmaking that flourished among New England artists at the time, while also demonstrating Chaffee’s mastery of color, perspective, and line. The figures in this work, playful elements, feel like they are engaging one another, leaning, eavesdropping, or seeking a grip against the perspectiveless scene in which they could topple over or float away. Oliver Chaffee was a highly influential painter who worked during the first half of the twentieth century. His bold, often experimental work presaged the art world’s journey from figurative work to modernism and abstraction. Chaffee was among the most instrumental figures in establishing Provincetown, Massachusetts, as one of the country’s most influential art colonies.
