Still Life with Apples and Nuts, 17th Century, Old Master, Spanish Painting

circa 1690

About the Item

Juan Sánchez Cotán (1560 - 1627) was one of the most important still life painters in Spain and beyond. He developed a certain type of still life with a stone niche and fruit and hanging objects placed inside. These are known as bodegón. Many of the following still life painters referred to him and his type of stone niche. The present painting also takes up this type, but the hanging objects are omitted. Instead, the still life is reduced to a few apples and walnuts and chestnuts. This reduction can also be seen in the colouring. The dramatic lighting highlights the individual objects and emphasises their respective surfaces and shapes.
