About the Item

A young woman at a popular cafe-bar in the Marais in Paris is the subject of Heartbreak, 1990 by Roberta Fineberg. As most young women do in Paris, they lose their hearts at cafes, in romantic settings and conversations, while heartbreak awaits... French style. Drawn to street photography for her early work, Roberta Fineberg who lived in France for a decade shot black-and-white film (analog) with a held-held 35mm camera in natural lighting in cities, notably New York, Paris, and Moscow. A black-and-white photograph the 14" x 11" was printed in 2015. Heartbreak is titled, numbered, and signed on recto (photo front) by the photographer. Provenance: RF archive *** Artist's Bio: As a visual artist drawn to experimentation Roberta Fineberg (RF) explores diverse mediums and subjects, which include the ephemeral (butterfly series), stolen moments (documentary work), play, timelessness, the enduring, significance of matter, and allow for serendipity in her art and photography. Her photography is in private and public collections, with portraits of women writers at the Bibliothèque Nationale and Bibliothèque Marguerite Durand in Paris, France. While a student in Paris in the 1980s exhibiting photographs in public spaces, RF began contributing editorial photography and articles to publications, landing a column (photos and writing) for The Saturday Review followed by freelance work in American Girl, Le Monde, Jeune Afrique, Paris Match, L’Officiel Femme, Ms., Weltwoche, Vanguardia, among others. In 1997 Macmillan published City Riders: A Story of Riding and Friendship, a story in words and pictures about three teenage girls who ride horses in New York City. Images licensed too through stock agencies Nonstock, Jupiter, and Getty, often for cover art in publishing: W.W. Norton, St. Martin’s Press, Harcourt, Bookspan, Simon & Schuster, etc. Print Regional Design Annual New York in 2003 awarded me in book jacket photography (cover art) for If Wishes Were Horses. Also award-winning: You Will Never Beat New York (2020) an experimental video, a love letter to the City, shot during the pandemic on a smartphone, receiving 14+ laurels from independent film festivals worldwide (2020-2021).
