About the Item
Protean American artist Robert Rauschenberg, certainly among the top 5 greatest American artists of the second half of the 20th century (to me, the greatest), could do almost anything. But he was perhaps best known for his print work, which increasingly engaged him over the years and became his primary passion and skill. This is a classic collage-style Rauschenbergian offset lithograph, combining random images in a carefully orchestrated way. It's pencil-signed and dated '83 by Rauschenberg, and is signed "P.P." by the artist to indicate that it is a Printer's Proof (apart from the editions of 90 and 120 printed by Larry Right Productions, New York). Printer's blindstamp lower left. Framed and ready to hang.

(After) Robert Rauschenberg
Milton Ernest "Robert" Rauschenberg was an American painter and graphic artist whose early works anticipated the Pop art movement. Rauschenberg is well known for his Combines, a group of artworks which incorporated everyday objects as art materials and which blurred the distinctions between painting and sculpture.

In Rivers's 1980 work "Camel," we see a slightly out of focus Camel Cigarette pack, an item from consumer culture Rivers has appropriated to create a critique of commoditization and consumer culture. Rivers would have certainly been aware of the work of Stuart Davis and his 1921 painting...Category
