The unusual color palette is striking and surreal, slightly halting the viewer’s ability to recognize the subject. Warhol utilized a photograph as his source to create this mesmerizing screenprint. While the saturated hues amplify the image, Warhol’s pop art style iconizes the turtle with intensity through his use of graphic outlines and commercial aesthetic. While this artwork was not a part of a series, it was created two years following Andy Warhol’s famous and acclaimed Endangered Species Portfolio, addressing the artist’s concern for the preservation of wildlife. While it is likely that Warhol’s care for ecological issues informed his creation, Andy Warhol Turtle, 1985’s conception was promotional. This artwork was published to coincide with the 1985 film Turtle Diary written by Harold Pinter, a romantic comedy centered on sea turtles at the London zoo, and the individuals who seek to free them from captivity. Created in 1985, Andy Warhol Turtle, 1985 is a color screenprint on Lenox Museum Board is hand signed by Andy Warhol (Pennsylvania, 1928 - New York, 1987) in pencil in lower right. Numbered from the edition of 250, 50 artist proofs, 10 printer's proofs, and 2 bon à tirer, this work was printed by Rupert Jasen Smith, New York and published by CBS, Inc., Los Angeles, California. Andy Warhol, whose name is synonymous with Pop Art*, was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and grew up in McKeesport, Pennsylvania. He studied art at the Carnegie Institute of Technology from 1945 to 1949. He then went to New York City where he became an illustrator until 1960 when he began making paintings based on comic strip characters such as Popeye, Dick Tracy, and Superman. He turned from the prevailing Abstract-Expressionist* styles and the emphasis on the artist's emotion to a hard-line Realism*, using many common images associated with the popular media such as a Campbell Soup can or a Coca-Cola bottle or Brillo pad. The first images were handpainted, but many were reproduced with a silk-screen process. He became the "first artist to utlize the screenprint medium to elevate both common and famous photographic images from popular culture to fine art status." (Falk Vol III, p. 3465) In May, 1999, ARTNews magazine named him one of the twenty-five most influential artists-ever. About him, it was written: . . . "it all began with the first Campbell's soup can in 1962. . . With this simple image, the concepts of appropriation and commidification were let loose for good. Warhol's celebration of his screen sirens, hustler hunks, and cafe-society wanna-bees . . .had an equally dramatic effect." In 1964, Warhol began making sculpture, often with labels from supermarkets, and in the 1970s, he turned to portraits, some of the most famous being Jackie Kennedy, Elvis Presley, Mao Tse Tung, and Marilyn Monroe. These images reflected his fascination with the topic of death, something he carried into a series called Death and Disaster, that included depictions of car crashes and gang warfare. Many celebrities and socialites regarded it as a notch 'up-the-ladder' of social recognition to be painted by Warhol. He died in New York City in 1987 from gall bladder surgery that no one expected to be complicated.

Andy Warhol

The name of American artist Andy Warhol is all but synonymous with Pop art, the movement he helped shape in the 1960s. He was phenomenally prolific, and the archive of original photography, prints, drawings, paintings and other art that he left behind is beyond vast.

Andy Warhol is known for his clever appropriation of motifs and images from popular advertising and commercials, which he integrated into graphic, vibrant works that utilized mass-production technologies such as printmaking, photography and silkscreening. Later in his career, Warhol expanded his oeuvre to include other forms of media, founding Interview magazine and producing fashion shoots and films on-site at the Factory, his world-famous studio in New York.

Born and educated in in Pittsburgh, Warhol moved to New York City in 1949 and built a successful career as a commercial illustrator. Although he made whimsical drawings as a hobby during these years, his career as a fine artist began in the mid-1950s with ink-blot drawings and hand-drawn silkscreens. The 1955 lithograph You Can Lead a Shoe to Water illustrates how he incorporated in his artwork advertising styles and techniques, in this case shoe commercials.

As a child, Warhol was often sick and spent much of his time in bed, where he would make sketches and put together collections of movie-star photographs. He described this period as formative in terms of his skills and interests. Indeed, Warhol remained obsessed with celebrities throughout his career, often producing series devoted to a famous face or an object from the popular culture, such as Chairman Mao or Campbell’s tomato soup. The 1967 silkscreen Marilyn 25 embodies his love of bright color and famous subjects.

Warhol was a prominent cultural figure in New York during the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s. The Factory was a gathering place for the era’s celebrities, writers, drag queens and fellow artists, and collaboration was common. To this day, Warhol remains one of the most important artists of the 20th century and continues to exert influence on contemporary creators.
