Mudd Club poster 1979 (Haring, Basquiat The Mudd Club)

1979

About the Item

Original Mudd Club street poster 1979: A must have for any true Jean-Michel Basquiat, & Keith Haring collector! The Mudd Club was the first venue where Basquiat DJ'd, performed with his group Gray and met Madonna. A seminal part of the history of the Downtown New York art scene of the late 70's & 80's where Keith Haring was also in charge of curating the VIP room. The list goes on & on... Poster on matte paper. 1979. Dimensions: 18x24 inches. Very good overall vintage condition. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Rare. Obtained directly from the original art designer working for owner Steve Maas in 1979. Located at 77 White Street, in a six-story loft building owned by the artist Ross Bleckner, the Mudd Club was a dingy gray-and-black box inside, with a bar initially made out of folding tables and a bathtub behind them to chill the beer. The club’s self-mythologizing denizens were a mix of the famous (Debbie Harry, the Talking Heads), the soon-to-be famous (Jean-Michel Basquiat, Debi Mazar) and the famous-below-14th Street (Glenn O’Brien, Chi Chi Valenti).
