Salvador Dali American Trotting Horses No.1 rare poster for Tokyo Exhibit 1974

1974

About the Item

Salvador Dali American Trotting Horses no.1 poster for Tokyo Exhibit 1974. This image is from the The Currier and Ives Suite of six lithographs published by Phyllis Lucas in 1971 and  shows Dali's interpretation of John Murphy, a champion harness jockey, driving the famous pair of champion racers Edward and Swiveller at the Gentleman's Driving Park in Morrisania, N. Y. 1882. A facsimile of the original Currier & Ives image is located in the lower section of the image. This poster was created  to advertise the one and only Japanese exhibition of the Lucas collection of original Salvador Dali  paintings. Mikimoto Pearls invited  Phyllis Lucas and her daughter Lucille to bring the masterpieces to their gallery in Tokyo for this historic event where it was very well received. The only other exhibit of the complete Lucas collection was at the Salvador Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, Florida previously in the same year. The collection has since been broken up. The original lithograph of  Trotting Horse No. 1 is also available from this gallery as are others from this suite. In 1965 Sidney and Phyllis Lucas became the first North American publishers of original signed limited edition lithographs by Salvador Dali. This collaboration between Master Dali and my parents continued until 1974 and The Lucille Lucas Gallery carries on the family tradition offering these original works for sale.
