About the Item

Jenny Holzer MORE TROUBLE THAN THOUGHT - Contemporary art, 21st Century, Figurative 2021 2 Colour Screenprint with hand applied Palladium Leaf on Coventry rag 335gsm. Jenny Holzer, along with seven other leading international artists, were asked to create a print to celebrate Tate Modern’s 21st anniversary. Two-thirds of the profits from the sale of each 'MORE TROUBLE THAN THOUGHT' print will benefit Tate. Jenny Holzer’s TATE 21 limited edition print features one of her iconic Truisms – “ACTION CAUSES MORE TROUBLE THAN THOUGHT”. The print employs a highly decorative, cursive font which has been rendered in hand-applied palladium leaf onto a screen printed silver-grey background. At first, the words remain somewhat elusive, merging into an overall elaborate pattern of flowing curls, but once discerned their meaning becomes clear and the simple message richly communicated. Jenny Holzer has presented her astringent ideas, arguments, and sorrows in public places and international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale, the Guggenheim Museums in New York and Bilbao, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Louvre Abu Dhabi. Her medium, whether a T-shirt, plaque, or LED sign, is writing, and the public dimension is integral to her work. Starting in the 1970s with her New York City street posters and continuing through her light projections on landscape and architecture, her practice has rivaled ignorance and violence with humour and kindness. The Truisms, originally devised in the late 1970s, consists of nearly 300 aphorisms or slogans that play on commonly held truths and clichés. Initially, the Truisms were infiltrated into the public arena via stickers, T-shirts, and posters. Later, Holzer started using electronic displays. In 1982 she blazed these messages across a giant advertising hoarding in Times Square, New York. The Truisms are deliberately challenging, presenting a spectrum of often-contradictory opinions. Holzer hoped they would sharpen people's awareness of the 'usual baloney they are fed' in daily life. JENNY HOLZER Jenny Holzer is an American neo-conceptual artist best known for her text-based works, which convey words and ideas in public spaces. LED installations have been central to Holzer's practice since 1996 and represent her most visible medium, although her practice incorporates a wide array of media including street posters, painted signs, stone benches, paintings, photographs, sound, video, projections, and the Internet. Variously insightful, aggressive, or comic, they express multiple viewpoints that the artist hopes will arouse a wide range of responses. Her statements are as short and concise as possible, to be able to reach the largest public and stimulate discussions about violence, sexuality, oppression, human rights, feminism, power, war, and death. Truisms (1977-79) are probably Holzer´s most well-known creation. The series, made up of nearly three hundred aphorisms and slogans featuring modern clichés or maxims, has become part of the public domain. In 1990, she was the first woman to represent the United States at the Venice Biennale, where she was awarded the Golden Lion. “ You only have a few seconds to catch people, so you can’t do long, reasoned arguments, [but] I hope they’re not simplistic or idiotic. ” —Jenny Holzer

  • An Organised Whole - Contemporary art, 21st Century, Landscape, Contemporary

Tacita Dean An Organised Whole 2021 Screenprint Edition of 125 60 × 76 cm (23.62 × 29.92 in) Signed, numbered and dated In mint condition Tacita Dean, along with seven other leading international artists, were asked to create a print to celebrate Tate Modern’s 21st anniversary. Tacita Dean works in a large number of techniques in media ranging from painting to photography and film, frequently combining more than one of them. She addresses issues relating to the passage of time, exploring what we remember and how we remember it. Often her art revolves around decay and loss as triggers of memories. For her Tate Modern 21 Years print Tacita Dean compounds the traditional ideas of landscape, and still life in a single collaged image. The background is from Tacita's extensive vintage postcard collected by the artist in her visits to European flea markets, while the black and white object is from her Father’s collection of flints. The foregrounding of the flint changes its scale, suggesting something more monumental than a simple flint, and having too the characteristics of a Henry Moore public sculpture. "My relationship to film begins at the that moment of shooting, and ends in the moment of projection. Along the way there are several stages of magical transformation that imbue the work with varying layers of intensity." —Tacita Dean TACITA DEAN Tacita Dean is a dedicated conceptual artist working primarily in film. Her eloquent 16 and 35mm analogue films are carried by a sense of history, time and place, and a fascination with the unique qualities of film itself. She was 17 years old and she found an old wind-up Standard-8 camera in his study. Being clockwork, ‘it didn’t need a battery, so I put a film in that’. And away she went. Influenced by a range of artists and writers, including Marcel Broodthaers...
