Joe Eula
The Supremes by Joe Eula, 1960s Motown

1965

About the Item

Joe Eula, vintage original The Supremes promo poster: Among Eula's most famous illustrations, this fashionable and soulful work was published in 1965 to publicize the legendary Motown group's concert at Lincoln Center (10/15/65). Off-set lithograph; 24 x 36 inches. Minor signs of handling; otherwise very good to excellent condition Plate signed on the lower left; from an edition of unknown. Vintage original poster, not a reproduction of any kind. The Guardian 2004, "To understand the gift of illustrator Joe Eula..., you need to look at his original poster done in the 1960s for the Supremes. It's just a few simple, strong brushstrokes, yet you feel as well as see the three singers synchronize their shoulder-shakes while each angles her feet uniquely." Philadelphia Sunday Bulletin, April 5 1970, p7, Phyllis Feldkamp writes "The most unforgettable one he (Eula) did was of three striking figures of the Supremes. It was plastered on lamp posts all over Manhattan, advertising the trio's October concert in 1965 at Lincoln Center." More on the artist Joe Eula (b. Connecticut, in 1925) is best known for creating eye-catching posters for Broadway shows and portraits for many celebrities, including Miles Davis, Marlene Dietrich, Diana Vreeland and later the Supremes and Liza Minelli. In the fashion world, Eula notably worked for American Vogue, and had a long-standing association with Harper's Bazaar. Eula also covered one of Yves Saint Laurent's first (1958) and last (2002) collections, and was a house artist for several other designers, including Coco Chanel, Givenchy, Gianni Versace, Christian Dior and Karl Lagerfeld. More on The Supremes The Supremes were the premier act of Motown Records during the 1960s. Founded as The Primettes in Detroit, Michigan, in 1959, the Supremes were the most commercially successful of Motown's acts and are, to date, America's most successful vocal group. Most of these hits were written and produced by Motown's main songwriting and production team, Holland–Dozier–Holland. At their peak in the mid-1960s, the Supremes rivaled the Beatles in worldwide popularity, and it is said that their success made it possible for future African American R&B and soul musicians to find mainstream success.
