About the Item
Pablo Picasso Peintre au Travail (Painter at Work), 1963 depicts three male figures conspicuously sitting beside each other. The contours of their bodies are highly irregular and almost erratic. The cross-hatchings add dimension to the areas where our eyes are immediately drawn in. Shadows guide the viewer where exactly to look as they form a stark contrast between black and white. The male figure in the middle sketches a picture of the nude on the right where he sits still as if frozen in time. Picasso adds a hint of cartoon and animal-like qualities in each of these figures. Upon closer inspection, their faces show a glimpse of either a faun or goat while their feet are almost claw-like. Picasso articulates playfulness by using humor to come across in this work. The cross between animal and human features maintains the hybridity of the simple yet dynamic nature of this work.
Created in 1963, Pablo Picasso Peintre au Travail (Painter at Work), 1963 is an etching on non-watermarked Rives paper hand-signed by Pablo Picasso (Malaga, 1881 – Mougins, 1973) in pencil in the lower right margin and numbered 28/50 in pencil in the lower left. There were also 15 artist's proofs.

Pablo Picasso
One of the most prolific and revolutionary artists the world has ever seen, Pablo Picasso had a tremendous impact on the development of 20th-century modern art. Although he is best known for his association with the Cubist movement, which he founded with Georges Braque, Picasso’s influence extends to Surrealism, neoclassicism and Expressionism.
“Every act of creation is, first of all, an act of destruction,” the Spanish artist proclaimed. In Picasso's Cubist paintings, he emphasizes the two-dimensionality of the canvas, breaking with conventions regarding perspective, foreshortening and proportion. Picasso was inspired by Iberian and African tribal art. One of his most famous pre-Cubist works is Les Demoiselles d’Avignon (1907), a painting considered immoral and shocking at the time for its depiction of nude women whose faces resemble Iberian tribal masks.
Picasso made many portraits in this style, most often of the women in his life, their expressively colored faces composed of geometric shards of surface planes. In Woman in a Hat (Olga), 1935, he painted his first wife as an assemblage of abstract forms, leaving the viewer to decipher the subject through the contrasting colors and shapes. Picasso was a tireless artist, creating more than 20,000 paintings, drawings, prints, ceramics and sculptures. Tracing his life’s work reveals the progression of modern art, on which he had an unparalleled influence.

Along the same lines, Braque himself says, "Forget things, only remember their relationship." These two statements encourage thoughtful viewing. Coming back to its nest and hatched egg, a great black bird is hardly visible against the dark green of its home and the brown leaves behind. Rather than spend time on the details, Braque emphasizes the spatial arrangement of the scene. Braque sees how the tree, nest and bird interrelate, and this entwined relationship is what he chooses to show.
